This position reports to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor and provides facility maintenance support to a multi-custody male correctional facility. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  1. Performing preventive and routine corrective maintenance tasks ensuring that assigned systems equipment and facilities are maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
  2. Requiring to have multiple trade skills to allow the individual to deal with the variety of maintenance tasks that will have to be dealt with on a routine basis at a correctional facility.
  3. Performing at the semi-skilled level for various maintenance trades as required.
  4. Supervising skilled semi-skilled and unskilled labor. (including offenders) to assist in completing assigned tasks.


As of January 1 2025 there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission effective January 1 2025. The new salary range will be $39671 - $69426.


Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position is NC09(Salary Range: $39671 - $69426). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies


  1. Documented working knowledge of commercial/industrial maintenance.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements



High School or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaANDtwo (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas(HVAC Plumbing Electrical Mechanics Construction); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Part 82 Subpart F.
