RegularPrimary Duties:
Assists in the admission/assessment process by taking vital signs weight and height and documenting parameters on the admission history or clinic documentation forms.
Delivers care or assistance promptly and accurately.
Contributes relevant and appropriate information to the responsible Nurse II.
Obtains and promptly records vital signs reporting any deviations immediately.
Assists patient with the routine activities of daily living including bathing feeding and ambulating.
Assists in prevention of complications of immobility by turning positioning and providing exercise to patient.
Collects monitors records and reports intake and output as directed.
Obtains and records patient height and weight and records/reports in an accurate fashion as directed.
Assists Physicians Nurse Practitioners or Registered Nurses in treatment or diagnostic procedures as requested.
Obtains routine specimens for diagnostic testing; performs routine testing for urine sugar and acetone pH and specific gravity according to organization policy and procedure.
Assists with post-mortem care.
Performs routine tasks including but not limited to enema administration and shave preps as assigned.
Follows and maintains procedures for universal precautions isolation and other infection control measures.
Responds to patient call lights and requests for assistance in a prompt fashion and intervenes appropriately.
Transports patients in a safe manner to diagnostic/treatment areas organization exits at discharge or other units as needed; retrieves and delivers specimens pharmaceuticals supplies or blood products to appropriate destination.
Performs a variety of other errands as requested.
Maintains a neat clean orderly and safe patient care environment and patient care support locations; ensures that linen is appropriately stored and that soiled linen is emptied and disposed of properly; cleans equipment and returns to appropriate area when not in use; identifies potential safety hazards and takes immediate appropriate action; performs established routine cleaning activities.
Routinely inspects and monitors the quantity and condition of supplies; places orders and maintains inventory; distributes inventory to areas as needed; distributes laundry to all areas as needed; monitors all sterile goods for damage and expiration date; monitors oxygen supply equipment and assures that adequate supplies are available; routinely takes inventory; monitors call lights as needed.
Orders x-rays and scans as directed; picks up all films and delivers to exam rooms or physician offices; assists with locating missing and/or misplaced films or records throughout the organization.
Demonstrates cooperative and respectful attitude and behavior with patients families colleagues and other departments; adheres to standards and expectations of organization employee conduct policy; maintains and respects patient confidentiality and privacy and adheres to organization policies on these matters.
Demonstrates open communication with unit/area staff to promote teamwork and collaboration; identifies problems and channels information to ensure resolution as appropriate.
Complies with and is knowledgeable of organization and department policies/procedures and standards of care.
Orients patients/families to nursing unit/area and instructs patients on safety measures.
Demonstrates knowledge of unit response to a disaster or emergency situation and carries out responsibilities as directed.
Attends/completes required mandatory in-services on an annual basis; participates in unit/area staff meetings at least quarterly; attends unit/area or department educational offerings which have relevance to the incumbents assignment special needs of assigned patient population new products or policies/procedures; participates in Quality Improvement activities committees or process improvement groups as requested.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures objectives quality assurance programs safety and compliance standards.
Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs reading current literature and participating in in-service meetings and workshops.
Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains distributes analyzes and projects information for required records reports and statistics as directed.
Attends meetings as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Other Descriptive Elements:
The Patient Care Technician typically reports to the Nurse II. Many of the duties performed by the PCT are delegated and are under the direction of a Registered Nurse (Nurse II). The incumbent has limited authority to make decisions or commitments directly related to the performance of the job. Authority to make decisions or commitments within the limits of organization policies and procedures that are clearly specified. Decisions are simple and based on well-defined choices.
Relationship with Others:
The Patient Care Technician has contact within the department and moderate contact with other departments. The incumbent also has day-to-day contact with patients vendors and sales representatives.
Functional Responsibilities:
Some computer knowledge and the ability to learn the operation of the Hospital Information System including order entry and retrieval.
Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patients served on the unit and in the facility.
Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients serviced on assigned patient care areas.
Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess date reflective of the patients status and interpret the information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed by pediatric through adult patient groups.
Ability to deal with people effectively.
Age-specific competency throughout the age continuum.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job the Patient Care Technician is frequently required to talk or hear and use hands or fingers to manipulate touch or handle. The incumbent is regularly required to stand walk and reach with hands or arms. They are occasionally required to sit climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl and taste or smell. The incumbent is frequently required to lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds and regularly required to lift and/or move more than one hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth vision and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are not job requirements but are representative of those demands that are typically expected of employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
