Requires ability to meet current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Basic Correctional Officer Training program and obtain BCOT Certification in Corrections within twelve months of hire date.
Must possess a valid drivers license.
One year of correctional officer experience preferred.
Correctional Corporal In addition to the above requirements Corporal candidates must also meet the following:
Two years as a BCOT certified Correctional Officer.
Must be able to receive a certificate of Appointment of Notary Public (depending on area of assignment).
Must have P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections and be in good standing.
Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study preferred.
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provides for inmate security by observing inmate behavior at all times in assigned area; watching for contraband and making physical inspections of facilities.
Assists in organizing inmate activities and controlling inmate traffic between activities.
Transports inmates both within and outside of correctional facility as needed.
Assists in shakedown and head count process as necessary; ensures all gates; doors rooms etc. are locked and secure as schedule dictates.
Monitors telephone radio and intercom as needed.
Monitors inmates in isolation segregation and sick room.
Fills in for other employees in their absence which may include assuming duties of shift supervisor as necessary.
Serves on disciplinary committee.
Provides processing of new inmates and outbound processing.
Performs other related duties as required.
When assigned to Food Service Division:
Reports to the Food Service Coordinator.
Directs the unloading of and inspects food and supplies delivered to the facility.
Ensures correct inventory.
Observes facility to prohibit contraband from entering.
Assists in organizing inmate work in the Food Service operational areas.
Fills in for other employees in their absence or when needed which may include assuming duties of Assistant Food Service Coordinator or Security Operations as necessary.
When assigned to Diversion Center:
Monitors and assists with inmate activities and controls inmate traffic between activities in the Diversion Center.
Processes new inmates and those that are being processed out of the facility.
Transports inmates both within and outside of the Diversion Center as needed.
Assists in shakedown and head count process.
Ensures all gates doors rooms etc. are locked and secure as schedule dictates.
Monitors telephone radio and intercom.
Fills in for other employees in their absence which may include assuming duties of shift supervisor as necessary.
May serve on disciplinary committee.
Receipts and codes daily monies; balances deposits with receipts.
Provides ordinance and guideline information to the general public.
Enters data and edits and balances daily monthly and year-end reports.
Assists with monitoring accounts payable budget expenditures.
Processes refund check requests/cash bonds; maintains related records.
Maintains vendor master file; inputs vendor information and changes to the system.
Maintains returned check system including data entry and preparing related correspondence.
Balances daily receipts to cash; prepares bank account deposits.
Assists internal and external auditors with account information for audits.
Responds to and assists with inquiries from businesses citizens vendors and user departments.
Performs a variety of clerical duties: answers the telephone copies documents types reports maintains files faxes documents picks up and distributes mail etc.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies procedures and activities of the Corrections Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Correctional Officer I.
Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
Knowledge of federal state and local laws and/or ordinances related to the incarnation of persons.
Knowledge of modern corrections procedures first aid and CPR.
Knowledge of defensive tactics to protect self and other; proper arrest and suspect apprehension techniques.
Skill to deliver tasks associated with position such as interpersonal communications observation of behavior of individuals and use of self-defense techniques.
Ability interact with individuals that may have mental health conditions that influence cognitive abilities and must be able to deal with individuals and stress in an environment that may result in chasing and subduing a suspect resisting arrest.
Ability to respond quickly and logically in emergency or stress situations.
Ability to understand the special problems of and deal humanely with individuals in confinement.
Ability to foster a team environment by supporting cohesive work relationships and providing effective conflict resolution.
Ability to compile organize prepare and maintain an assortment of records reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to handle the required mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply the regulations and procedures of the department.
