Other Conditions:

Evening weekend distance education television and or off-campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of the regular workload.

Position may be converted from 9-month to 11-month based on program needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach a range of Ilocano and/or Filipino Studies courses such as Beginning Ilocano Beginning Filipino and Philippine Literature. Conduct course assessments and other assessments of instruction based on student learning outcomes and improve student learning based on the results of assessment data.
  2. Under general supervision responsible for curriculum development in areas such as but not limited to: Filipino Studies Filipino Culture History and the Arts Filipinos in the United States: The History of Culture and Filipinos in the U.S. and Contemporary Philippine Issues.
  3. Actively participate in the University of Hawaii (UH) System Pamantasan Council and its working groups.
  4. Participate in the Pamantasan Academic Subject Certificate (ASC) working group and the development of a UH System-wide ASC which includes but is not limited to developing online course curriculum in collaboration with relevant UH System campuses and stakeholders.
  5. Work with student affairs programs to develop a coordinated plan for activities aimed at building college awareness and readiness supporting students and connecting them to existing campus retention and success programs. Engage in the planning and implementation of outreach recruitment and retention activities.
  6. Related work activities include but are not limited to advising and counseling students assisting in campus-related student activities participating in faculty/administrative committee community service and in-service training; maintaining an approved program of professional self-improvement collecting data and preparing reports preparing/adapting/revising course objectives as needed; independently planning organizing and carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments. May include instructional assignments involving distance education Early College and/or outreach throughout the UH system.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters Degree in Asian Studies (specialization in Philippine Studies)

OR

Masters Degree in a Philippine language with at least nine (9) credits of advanced and or graduate level coursework or research topic focused on Filipino areas

OR

Masters Degree in Ethnic or American Studies with at least 15 credits of advanced and or graduate-level coursework or research topic focused on Filipino areas

OR

Masters Degree in any Humanities with at least 15 credits of advanced and or graduate level coursework or research topic focused on Filipino areas

OR

Bachelors Degree in Ethnic Asian or Philippine Studies with at least 15 credits of advanced and or graduate-level coursework or research topic focused on Filipino areas AND three (3) years of related work experience

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Successful community college and or university teaching experience.
  2. Experience teaching in various modalities including in-person online-asynchronous online-synchronous and/or hybrid courses.
  3. Knowledge and experience working with student populations
  4. Experience teaching courses related to Ilocano Language Tagalog Language Filipino Studies Philippine Studies Ethnic Studies Asian Studies or related disciplines.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge skills and experience developing curricula specifically in Ilocano Language and/or Tagalog Language and/or Filipino Studies and/or Philippine Studies and/or Ethnic Studies and/or Asian Studies.
  6. Experience in the development of the Filipino Studies and/or Philippine Studies program division and college strategic plan goals.
  7. Experience working and developing course articulation for Cross Campus Course Sharing (C3S).
  8. Knowledge of issues affecting student populations in higher education.
  9. Experience in student services advising onboarding recruitment or other positions related to the duties of the position.
  10. Knowledge of UH System wide student support programs.
  11. Experience with advising student clubs and/or similar organizations.
