Job Description

Position Objective

The Meal Planner/Chef will support the program at Hayes Child Development Center by following best practices for children regarding food nutrition and family style dining as outlined by the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

Duties and Tasks (Essential Functions)

Duty: Prepare and Implement weekly menu plans according to USDA guidelines
Tasks include:

  • Plan prepare document breakfast a.m. snack lunch and p.m. snack according to USDA CACFP according to individual ages of children in the center.
  • Order food based on determination of food quantity based on enrollment and accommodations/substitutions for child allergies and food preferences
  • Communicate with center staff (teachers director manager) regarding food-related concerns updates and changes.
  • Follow safe food handling procedures outlined by USDA and Washington Department of Health food safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations
  • Deliver snacks and meals to classrooms.

Duty: Operate daily functions of kitchen duties and equipment
Tasks include:
  • Plan and complete food orders based on allotted fiscal year budget and center enrollment.
  • Operate a variety of standard kitchen equipment and utensils: mixer dishwasher electric warmer griddle oven stove blender etc.
  • Conduct inventory of kitchen items and report needs as necessary with support of center director.
  • Conduct required maintenance of equipment and sanitation of kitchen space and items.
  • Keep Safety Data Sheets up to date for chemicals used in kitchens and secure chemicals and protection devices.

Duty:Communication and interaction with center staff families and CPTC student work-studys and practicums/or volunteers
Tasks include:
  • Interact with children and adults in a positive manner.
  • Connect with families to discuss nutrition and individualized child needs
  • Role model and orient work study students who are assigned to work in the kitchen.
  • Assesses and evaluates performance of work study students assigned to kitchen in coordination with Center Director and Center Manager.
  • Maintain and update remote platform used for nutritional educational materials for families and staff

Duty: Center operational support and clerical tasks
Tasks include:
  • Provide assistance to children and families as needed.
  • Answers phones emails and in-person inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Utilize office equipment including stapler printer scanner and computer.
  • Manage and file center documents relating to meal planning per the required amount of time.
  • Assist with required data collection and reporting.

Duty:Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities.
Tasks include:
  • Attend staff meetings training and workshops to meet licensing Early Achievers ECEAP USDA WA DOH USDA CACFP and NAEYC standards.
  • Participate in team meetings
  • Maintain required certifications and trainings for licensing.

Duty: Other tasks and duties as assigned by program manager and director
Tasks include:
  • Participate in CPTC campus meetings and trainings.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current food handlers card.
  • Knowledge of USDA standard for early care program.
  • Six months of professional experience preparing meals for large-scale groups including restaurants catering or military kitchens.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working in an ECE program.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Word and Excel software.
