Job Description

General Summary:

Oversees and share oversight for the Beverly Adult and Pediatric Unit nursing services during day evenings and nights. Reviews shift reports from preceding shifts to be apprised of activity and issues; makes rounds or collaboratively manages rounds coverage to assure the quality of nursing services on all units. Monitors high risk and complicated cases and institutes appropriate actions when in-the-moment decisions are needed. May reassign and reallocate nursing resources to meet building needs. Provides significant input into the performance appraisal and competency assessment of nursing staff. Provides effective communication with the Unit Manager and Director. Participates in the development of nursing policies procedures standards of practice and in the planning and evaluation of nursing operations. responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments and triage for patients being considered for admission to the behavioral health unit. This role ensures that patients are appropriately evaluated stabilized and placed in the correct level of care while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and organizational standards.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:

1) Customer Relations - Actively seeks to provide quality services that meet the needs of patients as well as other customers - families visitors staff referrers and payers. Consistently represents nursing management in a professional collaborative patient-centered manner.

2) Operational Supervision of Shift

  • Monitors and ensures the delivery of quality nursing care services that meets internal and external standards.
  • Ensures the maintenance of a safe and therapeutic environment. Apprises Unit Managers/Directors of issues and collaborates to initiate corrective action in order to ensure compliance with internal and external standards.
  • Evaluates and monitors staffing to assure the effective utilization of resources to meet patient care needs. Authorizes changes in staffing and additional nursing staff as needed. Apprises the staffing office and nursing leadership of changes made.
  • Consults and communicates regularly with nursing leadership regarding significant occurrences and/or areas of concern.
  • Provides clear accurate and timely documentation.
  • Proactive planning of nursing resources for current shift and next shift in conjunction with nursing leadership and staffing office.
  • Communicate concerns (an praises) on staffs performance in real time.
  • Assist with maximizing patient flow (especially on evenings)
  • Reports to and supports all codes when possible to ensure patients and staff safety quality care and support all staff during emergencies as on-site support.
  • Collaborate with physicians psychiatrists therapists nurses and other care team members to determine appropriate admission disposition and time.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of assessments care plans and patient interactions in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA EMTALA and all facility and state/federal regulations regarding behavioral health care.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Emergency Department inpatient units and outside agencies to streamline transitions of care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff meetings as required.

3) Crisis Management - Handles clinical incidents according to policy and practices. Maintains a calm professional demeanor.

4) Delivery of Nursing Care Services

  • Utilizes clinical expertise in the provision of direct patient care as needed.
  • Assists with difficult admission and face-to-face evaluations for seclusion and restraint decisions.
  • Provides nursing consultation problem resolution and staff development.

5) Nursing Program Planning and Evaluation

  • Participates in the development of nursing policies procedures and standards of practice. Monitors the administration and adherence to established Hospital policies procedures and standards.
  • Participates in short and long-range planning and evaluation of Nursing operations and works to ensure continuous improvements in the quality of services.

6) Staff Leadership & Supervision

  • Provides clinical and administrative supervision as needed on a shift-by-shift basis.
  • Collaborates with Unit Managers/Directors to provide orientation and educational development of nursing staff.
  • Leads by example. Takes advantage of in-the-moment training as issues come up and as follow up to incidents and debriefings.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Work requires graduation from an accredited program of nursing possession of a current RN license in the State of Massachusetts and at least 3 years of psychiatric nursing experience with at least two years in an inpatient environment. BSN is preferred. Experience must include:
  • comprehensive knowledge of psychiatric nursing
  • strong clinical and leadership skills
  • knowledge of the specialized needs of varying patient populations
  • demonstrated ability to build collaborative work relationships
  • proven ability to make effective clinical decisions in the moment
  • general knowledge of TJC and regulatory requirements
  • computer skills that include familiarity with electronic medical record Microsoft Outlook Word and Excel scheduling system and electronic medications dispensing.
  1. Work requires interpersonal skills to provide effective leadership and coordination of nursing staff on assigned shift and to interact respectfully with patients visitors and staff.
  2. Work requires problem solving skills to manage resources respond quickly to emergencies and participate in the planning monitoring and evaluation of nursing services.
  3. Work requires constant adaptation to multiple demands for the individuals time and energy and produces a high level of stress and mental fatigue.
  4. Work requires the ability to quickly identify issues intervene and escalate as necessary.

In keeping with the Massachusetts Board of Nursing guidelines all nurses must have an active Massachusetts nursing license to practice in the state of Massachusetts or must have an active license in a compact state that allows them to practice in Massachusetts if they reside in that compact state. A multistate licensee who changes primary state of residence to another party state shall apply for a multistate license in the new party state within 60 days. The rule requires that a nurse apply for a new license in a new primary state of residence within 60 days of relocating it does not require the new license be issued within 60 days.
