Title: Library Services Coordinator

Division: Collections Exhibitions & Research

Reports to: Sr. Director of Research & Publications

Position Status: Full-time; Exempt

Salary: $45000/year


Position summary:

The Library Services Coordinator is responsible for daily management of the E. Claiborne Robins Jr. Reading Room as well as management and coordination of VMHC Library reference services.


Duties & Responsibilities:


Library Management:

  • Oversee daily management of the E. Claiborne Robins Jr. Reading Room including preparation and retrieval of collection items workflows reference services (in-person and remote) return of collection items and closing of the Library; work with the Manager of Library Cataloging to schedule Library staffing; ensure maintenance of Library and provision of associated resources; support Sr. Director of Research & Publications with fiscal management of the Library
  • Supervise the Library Associate interns and volunteers including priority setting coaching and performance management
  • Work with registered Library researchers in the reading room to locate materials in collections including identification of strengths within the collection catalog instruction and advice on research techniques
  • Support Library programs and colloquia; execute Library programs in the absence of the Sr. Director of Research and Publications
  • Serve on cross-functional teams and committees
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Reference Management:

  • Answer reference questions submitted by email telephone and mail
  • Participate in projects and outreach to promote access to and enhance the knowledge base for the collections and other VMHC resources
  • Oversee the processing of photocopy orders generated offsite via telephone website online catalog and mail
  • Assist visiting scholars Mellon Fellows and other researchers in planning their visits to the Library by locating materials that may be of interest to them; assist special groups when visiting the Library
  • Retrieve and shelve materials from the collections and process photocopy orders as required
  • Maintain the Librarys Vertical File including selecting material assigning appropriate LC subject headings and cataloging material in the collections management system
  • Stay abreast of news and developments in the fields of library studies information technology Virginia and U.S. history
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills & Abilities Necessary:

  • Strong knowledge of United States and Virginia history
  • Familiarity with VMHC collections catalog searching techniques and online databases
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and time management and coordination skills
  • Strong customer service skills

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in a related field such as history library science museum studies; Masters degree preferred
  • Four years of experience working with the public in a library or archives environment
