Job Description

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Supervising Electrician and working independently or as a team member the Electrician performs the full range of skilled journey-level electrical work at San Jos State University. This includes the installation maintenance modification and repair of electrical systems equipment and apparatuses across the campus. The incumbent inspects isolates troubleshoots and repairs malfunctions; plans layouts and wiring for new or remodeled installations; and ensures compliance with applicable codes and safety regulations. Additionally the Electrician operates and maintains low-voltage systems including fire alarms and access control systems and utilizes a computerized maintenance management system for scheduling and documenting preventive maintenance. The Electrician also trains and provides direction to semi-skilled or unskilled workers and plays a key role in ensuring safe reliable electrical services within the universitys complex infrastructure comprising over 150 acres and 81 buildings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled journey-level electrical work including installation inspection maintenance troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain electrical power systems low-voltage systems (e.g. fire alarms access systems) and related components.
  • Plan layouts and perform wiring for new or remodeled installations; fabricate electrical parts and perform incidental welding as needed.
  • Inspect completed work and contractor work for compliance with specifications codes and regulations.
  • Estimate time cost and materials for electrical projects.
  • Maintain records of work performed through manual and computerized systems including updating as-built documentation.
  • Use and maintain hand and power tools diagnostic equipment and safety gear.
  • Participate in shop operations including inventory control tool maintenance and safety compliance.
  • Provide safety instruction and direction to assistants; collaborate with other trades and departments
  • Operate university vehicles and lifts; respond to urgent service requests as needed.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical theory methods tools materials and safety practices applicable to the trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints plans and technical documents.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of hand/power tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to estimate materials time and cost for assignments.
  • Knowledge of applicable building and electrical codes including the California Electrical Code.
  • Skill in documenting work in digital maintenance systems; ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with diverse staff and campus community.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact professionally with customers and coworkers.
  • Commitment to safety sustainability practices and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to use and understand computer applications for work orders research and communications.

Required Qualifications

  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations
  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard 8000 hour (4 year) electricians apprenticeship program
  • Requires the possession of a valid California Drivers License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation

License

A valid drivers license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California drivers license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the electrical trades
  • Evidence of current certification as an electrician in the State of California
  • Five years of journey-level work experience in the maintenance repair or construction of electrical systems
  • Commercial or university campus experience

Compensation

Classification: Electrician
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6889/month - $7457/month
CSU Salary Range: $5998/month - $8737/month
