Job Description
Under the supervision of the assistant director of communications the intern may:
  • (50%) Research write and edit news releases and articles
  • (20%) Assist in planning and developing copy for print materials including invitations postcards flyers brochures signage posters ads donor materials and programs
  • (10%) Assist with the implementation of social media initiatives including drafting and scheduling posts
  • (10%) Provide support for outreach activities and events (invitation mailings event set up event staffing etc.)
  • (5%) Work with other interns and staff in the Office of Communications & Advancement on time-sensitive efforts
  • (5%) Update and create content for library websites and other responsibilities as assigned

  1. Majoring in journalism communications marketing or a related field; related experiences will also be considered.
  2. Demonstrated writing and editing ability as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Ability to write news content for specific audiences using AP style as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Clear communication skills and strong attention to detail as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Ability to work 15-20 hours a week as evidenced in application materials.
  6. Availability to work some evening events as evidenced in application materials.
  7. Effective interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  8. Excellent organizational skills accuracy and attention to detail as evidenced by the application material


  1. Knowledge of AP style as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Experience using social media for strategic communications as evidenced in application materials.


Position Overview
This position provides communication support for KU Libraries Office of Communications & Advancement through efforts including: writing and editing for news releases social media planning and implementation as well as web and multimedia content management. Additional responsibilities include assisting with libraries events outreach activities and marketing.

Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
