Physician Emergency Medicine (San Diego, CA)

This position is contingent on contract award.

This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program.  The person in this position will represent International SOS Government Medical Services Inc. and provide services outlined below: 

International SOS Government Medical Services Inc. is looking for an individual who is an experienced Emergency Room Physician to provide immediate medical care to patients facing acute illnesses and injuries operating in a fast-paced environment such as a trauma center. They are responsible for quickly assessing and stabilizing patients performing life-saving interventions and coordinating further treatment with specialists to ensure optimal patient outcomes in critical situations. 

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate treat and manage various medical emergencies. 
• Provide triage diagnosis disposition resuscitation and stabilization for all presenting chief complaints. 
• Provide emergent treatment and management of minor wound care respiratory illness gastrointestinal illness burns musculoskeletal trauma dermatological illness ENT eye and urological problems.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of minor procedures such as local infiltration anesthesia incision and drainage simple laceration repair nail trephination electro-coagulation nasal cautery gastric lavage bladder catheterization peripheral venous line insertion and spinal immobilization.  
• Provided emergent treatment and management of abdominal and gastrointestinal disorders (including trauma) of the esophagus stomach small bowel and colon rectum and anus liver and biliary tree and pancreas.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of cardiovascular disorders (including trauma) involving cardiac failure differential diagnosis of chest pain cardiac structural disorders cardiac rhythm and conduction defects pericardial disorders disease of peripheral arteries and veins shock and cutaneous disorders.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders caused by antigens organisms and other foreign substances such as reactions of hypersensitivity; reactions from venoms bites and stings; reactions caused by infectious agents; disorders due to chemical drug and physical agents; and disorders associated with the environment to include barotraumas near drowning electrical injury hypothermia and radiation injury.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders of the hematopoietic system such as anemia coagulopathy and management of acute neoplastic disease complications. 
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders of endocrine metabolic and nutritional natures relating to acid-base disturbances adrenal parathyroid and thyroid disturbances. 
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders of the head and neck (including trauma) involving the ears nose oral cavity larynx/trachea face and vestibular system.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders (including trauma) of the eye involving the lids and lachrymal apparatus conjunctiva cornea sclera internal aspects of the globe and orbit. 
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders (including trauma) of the musculoskeletal system involving shoulder girdle upper extremity and hand lower extremity and foot thorax and vertebrae and arthropathies.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders (including trauma) of the nervous system including cerebral edema coma cranial nerve disease cerebro-vascular disease and infection. 
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent disorders of psychiatric origin including depression anxiety reactions suicide and psychosis.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent respiratory disorders including pulmonary infection trauma neoplasia metabolic and complications of cardiovascular disease.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent renal and urologic disorders including acute/chronic renal failure infections obstructive uropathy and hematuria and trauma.  
• Provide emergent treatment and management of emergent OB/GYN disorders such as trauma infection and pregnancy (ectopic and intra-uterine).  
• Perform minor lacerations suturing and repair.  
• Perform procedures such as central venous line placement arterial catheter placement emergency chest tube or needle thoracostomy to relieve tension pneumothorax peritoneal lavage defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion endotracheal intubation lumbar puncture proctoscopy and anoscopy pericardiocentesis simple closed fracture and dislocation reduction arthrocentesis local/regional anesthesia moderate and/or deep procedural sedation pericardiocentesis temporary pacemaker placement chest tube thoracostomy and cricothyroidotomy when appropriate.  
• Stabilize and transfer patients that require a level of care higher. 
• Be present on time for any scheduled shifts as documented by physical presence in the ED at the scheduled start time.  
• Review all admissions to inpatient hospital care recommended by Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner).  
• Ensure person-to-person hand-off and hand-over from the admitting Provider to a responsible member of the admitting team.  
• Provide consultation with and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures so that the most expeditious and clinically appropriate care can be provided. 
• Determine the appropriate course of treatment and communicate in person or by phone with the referring clinicians.  
• Initiate appropriate social work referrals for all identified homeless veterans and for patients who do not have primary care providers but who appear regularly in the ED.  
• Apply or directly supervise the application of orthopedic devices such as splints and braces to stabilize orthopedic injuries. 
• Follow all established medication policies and procedures. No sample medications shall be provided to patients.  
• Provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all emergency Medicine patients.  
• Provide notification of test results for patients receiving care in accordance with VHA Directive 1088 Communicating Test Results to Providers and Patients. 
• Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation. 
• Attend staff meetings. 
• Complete the appropriate QM/PI documentation pertaining to all procedures complications and outcome of examinations. 
• Document care given and select appropriate Evaluation and Management (E&M) procedure codes in the current EHR. 
• Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care. 
• Complete required organizational compliance education including assigned requirements that are client-specified for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.

Qualifications :

Basic Requirements/Certifications:  

• Current active full and unrestricted license as a physician from a State the District of Columbia the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States. 
• Must possess significant recent experience working in an Emergency Medicine Setting. 
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. 
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. 

Education Required: 

• Doctor of Medicine Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association Association of American Medical Colleges Liaison Committee on Medical Education Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. 
• Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine. 

Physical Requirements: 

• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. 
• Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. 
• May require bending stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs.

• Must be able to read write and speak English to effectively communicate. 
• US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required. 
• Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical financial and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicants background experience skills internal equity and alignment with geographical market data.
