About the Team:
OpenAI is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with expertise in wireless (inductive/resonant) power transfer to design and optimize next-generation charging technologies for high-performance hardware products. You will own the end-to-end charging architecturefrom coil design and power electronics to system integration regulatory compliance and manufacturing ramp-up.
About the Role:
Architecture & Design
Develop and refine high-efficiency inductive and resonant charging topologies.
Design and optimize transmit and receive coils shielding and magnetic materials to meet coupling EMI and thermal performance targets.
Power Electronics
Implement synchronous rectifiers and control loops (voltage current FOD) using discrete components and PMIC solutions.
Specify and characterize power components and networks to achieve >90% end-to-end efficiency.
System Integration
Collaborate with mechanical RF battery and firmware teams to ensure robust alignment tolerance thermal performance and communication (IC SWD NFC) between charger fuel-gauge and system controllers.
Lead PCB layout for low-loss high-frequency paths (100 kHz 6.78 MHz) minimizing parasitics and ensuring controlled impedance and isolation.
Verification & Compliance
Plan and execute validation for power thermal EMI/EMC and safety certification.
Conduct failure analysis (FMEA) address field data and implement countermeasures to maximize reliability and safety.
Manufacturing & Test
Define DFM/DFT requirements production test limits and fixture design for coil characterization calibration and performance screening.
Support factory builds and resolve power-related yield issues.
Technology Leadership
Build internal wireless-power expertise mentor junior engineers and evaluate emerging materials and semiconductor technologies.
Qualifications:
5 years designing wireless or inductive charging systems for high-volume consumer or hardware products.
Hands-on experience with:
Qi/resonant wireless-power standards and compliance.
Analog/power electronics design up to 100 W (switch-mode converters resonant tanks synchronous rectification).
Coil magnetics and shielding simulation (Maxwell HFSS Flux or similar) and SPICE-based circuit modeling.
EMI/EMC mitigation thermal modeling and safety-critical design.
Schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout (Altium Cadence or similar) with SI/PI and thermal reviews.
Strong lab and debug skills: oscilloscopes VNAs power analyzers thermal cameras and Python/C test automation.
Ability to work cross-functionally in fast-paced development cycles.
Preferred Qualifications
Shipped at least one Qi-certified product at >1 M units.
Experience with adaptive FOD and inductive communication protocols.
Familiarity with battery pack design fuel-gauge algorithms and charging profiles.
Knowledge of global regulatory requirements (KC CRF CE RED PSE WPC) and third-party test-house engagement.
Masters degree (MSEE) or higher with a focus in power electronics or electromagnetics.
