Job Description

Title:Associate Dean of Admission & Director of Campus Visit Experiences

Position Purpose:

The Associate Dean of Admission & Director of Campus Visit Experiences serves as a member of the Admission team to recruit and enroll an academically talented class of students who reflect a myriad of backgrounds and experiences. The primary responsibility of the role is to provide the strategic vision and support for all on-campus recruitment events virtual programming and the Students in Admission program.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and oversee a strategic recruitment plan for the office that integrates in-person campus events virtual programming and the Students in Admission program.
  • Create a vision for how the Office of Admission welcomes prospective students and families to Bates and how they learn about the college while visiting campus.
  • Partner with the Communications Team to market and promote recruitment events and with the Data Analyst for reports and data to inform recruitment strategy.
  • Assist the Director of Operations in creating the daily schedule of on-campus events for visitors.
  • Lead the Events Team by providing them vision and direction of all on-campus events including (3) Summer Open Houses Fall Open House Prologue to Bates Bates-Bowdoin-Colby Counselor Tour and (2) Bates Beginnings for Admitted Student.
  • Responsible for managing the on-campus events budget.
  • Support the Admission Counselors who oversee all student recruitment efforts on campus including tour guides admission fellows phone-a-thon and open house volunteers and student ambassadors.
  • Serve on the Senior Leadership Team and help advise the VP/Dean and Director of
    Admission on the general direction of the office.
  • Step in and help troubleshoot/take action as needed in emergency situations.
  • Provide staff with autonomy and empower them to own and manage their work while still providing strategic guidance and be a thought partner as needed.
  • Foster a positive culture while providing direct feedback.
  • Provide professional development opportunities either in the office on campus or off campus.
  • Responsible for sharing pertinent information from the leadership team meetings with staff and schedule consistent weekly meetings with direct reports.
  • Approve and manage vacation and personal time requests as well as time sheets for all direct reports.
  • Manage geographic territories as assigned and coordinate 4 to 6 weeks of travel per year.
  • Develop an annual travel plan and evaluate the effectiveness of each activity in order to recommend improvements and changes in strategy.
  • Represent Bates at high school visits college fairs and other off- and on-campus recruiting
    events.
  • Work in pairs or as part of a team to evaluate first-year and transfer applications.
  • Lead on-campus information sessions; counsel families through admission and financial aid process and engage with key constituents such as alumni current students and high school counselors.
  • Attend designated conferences and/or other professional development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Valid drivers license required.

Experience

  • 5-7 years of experience in admission or in a student/customer service academic and/or non-profit setting are preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education preferably the liberal arts.
  • Given the increasingly diverse pool of prospective students the ability to communicate in other languages is preferred but not required.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
  • Excellent communication (written verbal and presentation) skills.
  • Experience in digital/video media is a plus but not required.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Impeccable organizational (time task project management) skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (a sense of humor is a plus) with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Must approach work with collaboration and nimbleness.
  • Genuine curiosity about the world particularly higher education and issues of access diversity equity and inclusion.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g. Google Suite Microsoft Office).
  • Basic data management system and/or CRM proficiency (e.g. Slate) is preferred but not required.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional technology applications and systems as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by air bus car or train) domestically for four to six weeks concentrated in the fall and spring.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends evenings and other non-traditional schedules.
  • Personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a selective liberal arts college.
