Job Description

Special Education Head Teacher Salem Prep High School (INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY)SY 2025-2026

Description: The purpose of the Special Education Head Teacher is two-fold - to provide coaching and support that strengthens instructional practices across all classrooms within designated department of school and to provide administrative support in scheduling test administration understanding of and compliance with special education policies and procedures and professional development and training for teachers and paraprofessionals.

The Head Teacher will work directly with the Salem Prep High School Principal Special Education Supervisor and program faculty members to offer direction and support with curriculum development and review IEP development high quality instructional practices assessment development and data analysis and general special education goals for the school year. The primary goal of the Head Teacher is to build capacity for expert therapeutically aligned instruction in every classroom of the program as well as support the structures for the delivery of specialized instruction. As a general rule the Head Teacher will spend a portion of their time functioning as a coach in the areas of curriculum instruction and assessment and a portion of their time providing direct services to students and performing the teaching responsibilities for their designated teaching role within the program.

Special Education Head Teacher Responsibilities:

Coaching Building Capacity

  • Lead curriculum planning development and student academic performance data review.
  • Assist in strategic planning and monitoring of the schools priorities and measurable annual outcomes.
  • Design and implement high quality professional development.
  • Work with teachers one-on-one and in small groups for the purpose of cross-functional planning in the areas of planning therapeutically aligned lessons using a wide range of curriculum materials determining student specific instructional approaches and implementing research-based instructional strategies to support implementation of high-quality core instruction.
  • Foster teacher collaboration and sharing of best practice
  • Introduce best practices in the area of pedagogy through demonstration lessons co-teaching co-planning reciprocal peer observation study groups and professional development workshops
  • Build teacher capacity to interpret and use a range of assessment tools determine special education eligibility plan lessons and address individual student needs in the respective subject area
  • Articulate goals and practices to meet objectives of the schools and Districts improvement and strategic plans as needed to staff and parents
  • Meet weekly with the Principal to analyze data coordinate Instructional Rounds and discuss next steps for school-based professional development that supports growth in student achievement and engagement
  • Assist in identifying and addressing any school practices that may need to be better aligned with the goals of Special Education Department the school and/or District improvement and strategic plans
  • Engage in advanced training opportunities designed to strengthen content knowledge pedagogy therapeutically aligned instructional practice and coaching skills
  • Monitor progress towards meeting school-wide literacy math social-emotional learning and other student achievement goals set within improvement plan

Direct Instruction

  • Provide direct instruction for students within assigned classes
  • Assume the role and responsibilities as designated for a classroom teacher

Departmental Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist with facilitating program meetings that promote collaboration. Build agenda items reflective of school and District improvement plans
  • Provide peer support for teachers in the program
  • Assist with planning schedules for teachers within program and determine overall course offerings
  • Distribute collect and maintain paperwork and written materials upon request
  • Meet with Principal and/or special education supervisor before and/or after school as necessary
  • Teach four (4) courses/blocks as determined by Director and Special Education supervisor

Note: The evaluation of teachers is not part of the Head Teachers responsibility. However the role of the Head Teacher is to provide non-evaluative lesson planning and instructional feedback to teachers.

The Special Education Head Teacher reports to the Salem Prep High School Principal (Primary) and the Special Education Supervisor (Secondary)

The Special Education Head Teacher salary is a stipend
