Job Description

Fahrenheit Advisors is assisting The Science Museum of Virginia Foundation in the selection of their Senior Director of Finance & Administration.

The Science Museum of Virginia Foundation is seeking a strategic detail-oriented finance professional to lead and manage the organizations financial accounting HR payroll and administrative operations. As we prepare for the Science Museums 50th Anniversary and a major capital campaign this role will be critical in providing clear accurate campaign reporting and supporting strategic decision-making across leadership and development functions.

This senior role oversees all Foundation financial systems and reporting investment and cash management audit and compliance payroll and benefits administration and nonprofit governance support. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative partner and strong communicator who can present complex financial information in clear accessible ways.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Manage daily financial operations systems and transaction processing in accordance with GAAP.
  • Lead preparation of internal and external financial statements campaign and donor reporting and annual audit processes.
  • Oversee budgeting forecasting and financial analysis across operational restricted and campaign funds.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory filings (IRS Form 990 SCC VCU component unit reports etc.).
  • Reconcile financial data across systems (Financial Edge Raisers Edge NXT others).
  • Administer investment and endowment activities including reporting unitization and fund distributions.
  • Maintain robust internal controls policies and compliance systems.
  • Monitor cash flow and manage financial coordination between Foundation and the Science Museum.
  • Provide campaign giving reports and financial materials for board and campaign meetings.

2. Payroll Benefits & HR Oversight

  • Administer payroll and employee benefit plans (health retirement FSA workers comp etc.).
  • Ensure accurate employment records compliance with labor laws and timely tax filings (941 W-etc.).
  • Maintain employee handbooks leave tracking and onboarding/offboarding documentation.
  • Oversee relationships with benefit providers and payroll service vendors.

3. Governance & Strategic Support

  • Serve as financial liaison to the Finance Investment Audit and Executive Committees and the Foundation Board.
  • Prepare and present financial reports dashboards campaign summaries and meeting materials.
  • Support the CDO Foundation President and the Science Museum CEO in board meeting preparation campaign tracking and budget development for philanthropic proposals.
  • Coordinate annual audit and investment manager activities including RFPs reviews and reporting.
  • Assist in reviewing contracts related to mission-driven sponsorships and philanthropic support.
  • Lead annual review and update of financial and administrative policies.
  • Translate financial data into simple compelling formats for non-financial stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree in Business Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 710 years of progressive financial leadership experience preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP nonprofit tax and audit standards and grant compliance.
  • Experience with financial and donor database systems (Financial Edge and Raisers Edge strongly preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; adept at presenting financial information to varied audiences.
  • Strong analytical organizational and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Personal qualities of integrity initiative flexibility and a deep commitment to the Museums mission
