Job Description

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the department chair this position provides administrative technical and analytical duties for budget and fiscal processes in support of the Journalism Department while coordinating the day-to-day operations of the department office. Incumbent gathers and provides financial and statistical information reviews financial data patterns and projections; and collaborates closely with the department chair and student media general manager to ensure that department financial functions operate effectively and within CLA guidelines.

This position provides general clerical support for the department chair and faculty and is responsible for providing information and support for administration faculty students advisory board parents and the public regarding department programs. The position provides a full range of clerical support for faculty the department chair.

The position is responsible for continuity of operation with respect to changes in leadership and faculty interface regarding Department College and University policies and procedures. Assignments may require interaction with the highest levels within and outside the university often involving sensitive interpersonal situations requiring confidentiality.

Department Summary

Cal Polys Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Artsoffers a Bachelor of Science degree in department was established in 1950 and has an alumni body composed of distinguished and well-known hold positions with the major national networks and local affiliates national and local newspapers public relations departments and related Journalism Department presently includes about a dozen faculty 4 staff members and over 350 students. The Journalism Department houses laboratories for TV broadcasting radio broadcasting multimedia and public relations education. Cal Polys student media (Mustang Media Group MMG) includes MustangNews KCPR MNTV and MNPR. These media organizations are made up of students throughout majors across the university.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to initiate establish and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive cooperative productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar spelling and punctuation; excellent proofreading skills; ability to perform very detailed work with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Capacity to learn and adapt quickly to new technology software situations methods and procedures; general interest in making full and efficient use of information technology and resources. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing spreadsheets databases and web-based systems.
  • Ability to independently analyze budget data and make accurate projections using mathematics and applicable statistical techniques. Skill in collection and evaluation of data to develop valid conclusion and recommendations.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or its equivalent. Type 45 wpm.
  • Five years of general office support or technical experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience)

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range:$4247 - $5545 monthly

Classification Range: $4058 - $6653 monthly

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position based on internal equity budget and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
