Job Description

APM Terminals

Lead the Port Elizabeth Modernization Works Equipment implementation process (including tendering negotiation procurement installation and commissioning) based on APMTs standard solutions and Port Elizabeth project specific business requirements.
Liaise on behalf of the Port Elizabeth project equipment function with the relevant local functional departments to drive change accelerate the implementation of equipment and related services and ensure that automation challenges are addressed in a unified manner (Equipment and Electrical & Instrumentation).

APM Terminals Elizabeth currently handles over 25% of the annual container throughput in the port complex supported by more than 1100 members of the International Longshoremens Association (ILA).

The Port Elizabeth Upgrade Project

APM Terminals and the Port of New York and New Jersey recently reached an agreement on the lease extension for APM Terminals Elizabeth though 2062. This extension paves the way for major infrastructure investments which will enhance capacity and transport velocity create jobs and strengthen the economy.

APM Terminals will invest significantly in Port Elizabeth over the coming years to enhance cargo-handling capacity at its 345-acre terminal. APM Terminals has also committed to the replacement and maintenance of all wharf and berth structures. This investment supports the Port Authoritys Port Master Plan 2050 which anticipates cargo volumes doubling or tripling by mid-century.

Looking to the future APM Terminals Elizabeth envisions a larger more efficient container terminal. Planned upgrades include the optimization of the terminal layout electrification of container handling equipment and future-proofing container berths.

Functional reporting line to: Asset Design and Engineering Head of Equipment

Role Overview:

Lead the Port Elizabeth Modernization Works Equipment implementation process (including tendering negotiation procurement installation and commissioning) based on APMTs standard solutions and Port Elizabeth project specific business requirements.

Liaise on behalf of the Port Elizabeth project equipment function with the relevant local functional departments to drive change accelerate the implementation of equipment and related services and ensure that automation challenges are addressed in a unified manner (Equipment and Electrical & Instrumentation).

Drive the integration of the Port Elizabeth project equipment into terminal operations in coordination with various business functions within Port Elizabeth and APMT.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

Manage the Equipment delivery by specifying procuring commissioning and integrating various types of equipment as part of the project scope.

Propose final Port Elizabeth Upgrade Works technical set-up for Equipment Systems Equipment Electrical Instrumentation and Control

  • The approved Port Elizabeth Modernization project Scope Document.
  • Work with APM Terminals Global Equipment standards
  • Ensure alignment of equipment procurement and specifications with legal union and EPA grant requirements
  • Align with APM Terminals Crane engineering services on the delivery and proactively manager their services to the project
  • Local requirements in conjunction with the local project team.
  • Be a sparring partner to all functional departments and challenge requirements for Technical/Engineering set-up to ensure we implement the most up-to-date solutions and end up with fit for purpose.

Coordinate Technical/Equipment Integration activities including:

  • Defining Equipment technical specifications.
  • Driving equipment vendors progress to fit expected deadlines.
  • Equipment/Systems assembly/installation
  • Equipment commissioning
  • Integration testing
  • Super User (Equipment Maintenance) Training.

Coordinate the (in-house or third party) Equipment implementation team and follow-up on deliverables.

  • Issue regular written business status and operating measurements reports to respective stakeholders:
  • Proactively disseminates support status information to all stakeholders.
  • Reconciles conflicts within and between staff regarding resources deadlines and standards.
  • preparing implementation and integration plans for the Equipment related projects inclusive of budget and detailed time schedules meeting the overall implementation targets.

HSSE

  • Actively promote HSSE and assume a visible leadership role on the project site with accountability of the equipment HSSE setup
  • Support that all staff maintain full awareness of safety as a priority.
  • Monitor compliance by all designers and contractors to Port Elizabeth and APM Terminals safety standards and policies in cooperation with the project HSSE manager.

Stakeholders and Reports

  • Direct reporting: Head of Asset Delivery
  • Functional reporting: Asset Design and Engineering Head of Equipment

  • Geographical scope: Elizabeth Terminal New Jersey USA and travel to suppliers sites

Interfaces

  • Actively manage and direct equipment vendors and related (quality control) consultants
  • Work with the Port Elizabeth Operations Asset Maintenance Project Development and IT teams to manage interfaces and progress.
  • Liaise with the Asset Engineering department Asset Digitization at the APM Terminals head office to ensure consistency with APM Terminals standards.
  • Provide feedback to the Project Execution team on any lessons learnt or areas of improvement in the standards.

Qualifications Skills and Experience:

Experience

  • Excellent understanding of port equipment modernized E-RTGs systems and controls and related industrial infrastructures architecture.
  • Expertise (7 years) within the container terminal field with traceable and successful hands-on new equipment delivery management record.
  • In-depth management knowledge and ability to interact with stakeholders across several lines levels in business units and group support functions.
  • Have an understanding of equipment contracts and specifications and ability to manage same.

Qualifications / skills

  • Good understanding of project management change management and escalation processes that create a highly responsive project organization.
  • Team player capable of motivating peers and reports in order to achieve project success.
  • Good communication skills where excellent level of English is a must.
  • Driven self-motivating result oriented.
  • High discipline following through on actions and ensuring necessary documentation.
  • High quality awareness and ability to work with constant care.
  • Sensitive to cultural diversity and experience in a multicultural environment regarding colleagues employees of vendors and other stakeholders.
  • Fluent in MS office

Education

  • University degree (BSC / MSC) in Engineering preferred mechanical / crane engineering
