DescriptionCherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs is gearing up for an exciting horse racing season and is hiring a seasonal Clerk of Scales to join our team! The Clerk of Scales plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and fairness of horse races. This position involves overseeing all jockey-related activities including weight verification ensuring compliance with racing rules and maintaining a secure and professional environment for jockeys.
NOTE: This position is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. Please note that a positive drug test result including for marijuana may result in a job offer being rescinded for applicants or termination of employment for current employees even if they possess a valid medical marijuana license.
Responsibilities- Ensure jockeys are present in the jockey room at the appointed time.
- Verify the correct weight of each jockey before and after each race.
- Report any weight discrepancies to the stewards.
- Assign jockeys to horses based on race entries and scratches.
- Verify that all jockeys have a valid doctors physical exam on file.
- Oversee the work of valets during each racing program.
- Record all required data on scale sheets and submit data to appropriate personnel.
- Maintain records of winning races for apprentice jockeys.
- Oversee and direct all daily activities in the jockeys room.
- Ensure compliance with all racing rules and regulations.
- Maintain a professional and impartial environment in the jockeys room.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least one year of experience in a racing environment is preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of horse racing rules and regulations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain a professional and impartial demeanor.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
- Ability to work in a casino environment which may include exposure to second-hand smoke and crowd noise.
- Ability to obtain and maintain licensing by the appropriate gaming authority.
- Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.
