JOB TITLE:

Assistant Teacher

JOB PURPOSE:

The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming seeks two part-time Assistant Teachers to deliver college-level and K-12 educational programs. Duties are split as indicated below:

  • Morning Assistant Teacher: Works M-F 9:00-1:00 and hosts any classes/groups that visit during that time (regardless of age group but with a focus on K-12). When not in the classroom this AT will work to promote the AHC to K-12 teachers recruit more K-12 visits and create engaging history-focused experiences for K-12 students aligned with Wyomings social studies standards.
  • Afternoon Assistant Teacher: Works M-F 1:00-5:00 and hosts any classes/groups that visit during that time (regardless of age group but with a focus on college level classes and adult groups). When not in the classroom this position works to support the AHCs mission to promote primary source literacy by recruiting more college-level class visits to the AHC enhancing the AHCs visibility on campus and working with college students to achieve their research goals.

Both these roles involve introducing college students to historical research/the AHCs resources and creating engaging history-focused experiences for students. Both positions may also be involved with community events to promote the AHCs visibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Public History Educator with planning and teaching classes for college and K-12 students including on-site off-site and virtual sessions.
  • Deliver instructional sessions to help university students develop primary source research skills tailored to various academic disciplines.
  • Recruit K-12 classes for AHC visits and design interactive age-appropriate history programs.
  • Develop lesson plans activity guides and teaching resources for K-12 educators as needed.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Perform other duties as may include helping with other AHC events or projects such as exhibits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:Enrollment in or completion of a bachelors degree program in education history or a related field.

Experience:Experience can substitute for education and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Experience in archives libraries or museums education is highly valued. Some classroom or informal education experience is required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in an archive library or museum setting.
  • Familiarity with K-12 educational standards and instructional practices.
  • Demonstrated experience or coursework in instructional methods information literacy or primary source research.
  • Some flexibility in scheduling is desirable if occasional visits do not align exactly with scheduled work hours.
