POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Parent Mentor-Part Time

Overview:

Ohios Parent Mentor Project works with the families of students with disabilities and their schools to support educational success for students with special needs. The Objective is to be a partner in creating a system of services and resources within school districts and communities to support families of children with disabilities. Through interaction and communication with families school staff and the greater community partnerships and alliances may develop in support of children and youth with disabilities



Job Duties

  • Support student success especially in literacy;
  • Help plan transitions from preschool to school and from high school and beyond;
  • Collaborate with families and school teams to support understanding of the special education process
  • Attend individualized education program (IEP) meetings and other meetings at the request of families or staff members;
  • Host information sessions for families and staff members;
  • Connect families schools and communities by providing links to local services and organizations that support students with disabilities;
  • Provide information about federal state and local special education laws and policies;
  • Share updated information about special education such as timelines and deadlines eligibility processes informed consent prior written notice and other requirements;
  • Submit project evaluation data by the quarterly deadlines
  • Attend any statewide meetings
  • Promote parent mentor services within school buildings
  • Provide OSU electronic documentation of required data
  • Attend professional development offered by OSU







Core Responsibilities/Essential Duties:

  • Work collaboratively with school teams and outside agencies.
  • Model proper work habits and skills
  • Assure ongoing positive relationships between individuals served in the community
  • Foster a teamwork environment
  • Maintain open communication with students staff and families
  • Implement and comply with all of CPS organizational policies and procedures
  • Maintain high level of ethical and confidentiality of information about the student
  • Follow work schedule and CPS calendar
  • Maintain high ethical standards; serve as a cooperative and productive team member within assigned team
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Department of Student Services Manager

Qualifications:

  • Is a parent of a child with a disability;

  • Is a member of the community or has knowledge of the community served;
  • Has leadership in the parent community;
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills;
  • Experience in facilitating training and/or providing parents with resource information
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
