Job Description

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Custodial Crew Manager works independently or as a team member to provide general cleaning and custodial care and support for assigned campus buildings facilities structures and adjacent areas and/or portions thereof including but not limited to campus offices classrooms science laboratories art rooms auditoriums gymnasiums locker rooms health and child care centers student residences patios entryways walkways and workshops. Custodial staff may work independently or as part of a custodial team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain assigned areas including such activities as dusting and cleaning all surfaces
  • Removing and properly disposing of trash ensuring diversion from the waste stream for all recyclable materials
  • Cleaning and disinfecting restrooms locker rooms showers and other similar areas
  • Replenishing custodial supplies used by others including soap toilet paper paper towels and similar items.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate inventory of custodial supply closets and equipment areas as assigned to the position or crew
  • Cleaning glass doors windows and blinds
  • Removing graffiti
  • Making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and furniture such as oiling doors tightening screws and replacing foots on chairs and table
  • Unlocks and secures custodial storage equipment and supply rooms to access equipment materials and supplies
  • Clean and maintain floors of all types including sweeping dry and/or wet mopping stripping sealing waxing and polishing vacuuming spot and full cleaning of carpets or other flooring

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to develop and apply knowledge pertaining to the methods chemicals and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures required to maintain a clean safe and sanitary University environment
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety
  • Ability to recognize and accommodate changing priorities meet deadlines/goals and complete routine tasks despite intermittent interruptions
  • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity
  • Ability to move up to 50 pounds
  • Possession of a valid California Drivers License may be required at time of hire if the position is assigned to operate any vehicle required for this position

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate verbally at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written directions
  • Ability to understand chemical/product mixing ratios and ability to label containers accordingly
  • Requires the possession of a valid California Drivers License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

License

A valid drivers license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California drivers license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and/or equivalent education
  • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity
  • Ability to learn how to use University systems to track work and communicate
  • Understanding of safe work practices and methods
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Six months of full time custodial or service industry experience in an institutional or commercial setting
  • Six months of full-time experience with industrial commercial cleaning equipment
  • Experience working within a University setting

Compensation

Classification: Custodian
Anticipated Hiring Range: up to $3680/month
CSU Salary Range: $3680/month - $4951/month
