Southampton Store Support Office

Role Purpose: Reporting to the Head of Legal you will lead the Data Protection Team in managing legal risk adhering to regulatory deadlines supporting the development of compliance processes policies controls and managing B&Qs response to regulatory action data breaches and litigation. Youll also provide commercial expert advice to B&Q stakeholders and be the primary lawyer for negotiating data protection agreements.

Whats the job

  • Manage the data protection team (five direct reports).
  • Investigate and report on data breach incidents.
  • Manage ROPAs DPIAs and SARs.
  • Provide expert legal advice on data protection and privacy matters.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection laws including GDPR and other relevant regulations.
  • Draft review and negotiate data protection agreements/clauses including data processing agreements and data sharing agreements.
  • Develop and implement data protection policies procedures and training programs.
  • Monitor and advise on regulatory developments in data protection and privacy law.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities and manage responses to regulatory inquiries and investigations.
  • Partner with stakeholders and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data protection compliance across the organisation.
  • Provide support in a commercial pragmatic and simple manner.
  • Build strategic relationships to collaborate and influence on strategic workstreams/projects.
  • Maintain oversight of compliance controls identify improvements utilise key relationships to drive change and influence the development of compliance processes policies and operational procedures.
  • Lead shape and develop the Data Protection Team to support the wider business on a broad and diverse range of legal data protection matters.
  • Role model the B&Q behaviours and develop members of the team aligned to B&Q behaviours.
  • Maintain close relationships with internal and external teams and instruct in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
  • Represent the business in external retail led meetings.

What we need:

  • Qualified solicitor with a strong background in data protection and privacy law.
  • Management experience.
  • Experience of investigating data breaches and managing ROPAs DPIAs and SARs.
  • Excellent knowledge of GDPR and other relevant data protection laws and regulations.
  • Strong drafting negotiation and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proactive self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of work.
  • Ability to lead develop and coach team to drive high performance.
  • Previous experience of managing multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate and influence stakeholders across all levels.

Education & Qualifications:

Law degree from a recognised institution.

Qualified solicitor in England and Wales with at least 10 years PQE.
