The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) will play an important role in the day-to-day activities of the laboratory. The role holder will report to a Biomedical Scientist or MLA Coordinator. The MLA will perform routine technical and scientific work in the laboratory under the supervision of the Biomedical Scientists/MLA Coordinator. The role holder will be responsible for complying with local standard operating procedures (SOPs) for processing diagnostic specimens to a high standard. The MLA will be expected to work efficiently in a busy and dynamic environment following the prioritisation of workload set by senior laboratory staff. They will also assist with training and support of Junior MLAs where appropriate. The role holder will be expected to maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with policies and regulations.
Working Pattern and Location
The role is a full-time position with a standard 37.5 hour working week. The role holder may be required to work flexibly.
The Medical Laboratory Assistant will be based at 2 Falcon Road Hinchingbrooke Business Park Huntingdon PE29 6FG.
What you will be doing
Once competent the performance of routine cellular pathology tasks inclusive of: microtomy embedding special stains IHC digital pathology
Assisting with specimen reception
Undertake routine laboratory techniques in line with applicable Standard Operatin
Procedures under the direction or supervision of a Biomedical Scientist or MLA Coordinator
Service for both diagnostic and research work
Carry out clinical specimen preparation and assisting dissection (cut up) of surgical excisions
Cytological processing of specimens obtained using Cyteds oesophageal cancer early detection medical device Assisting with the manufacture and distribution of Cyteds cell preservation kits including meticulous record keeping
Assisting with the distribution of Cyteds Cell collection device to customers
Management of laboratory waste disposal including reagents and clinical specimens
Receipt storage and distribution of laboratory consumables and reagents maintaining the departmental inventory control system
To undertake routine tasks essential to the general good maintenance and housekeeping of the laboratory e.g. daily upkeep of equipment cleaning washing up
Maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with all applicable regulatory standards and guidelines
Filing/dispatch of important diagnostic material including microscope slides paraffin blocks residual surgical specimens and paperwork
Meticulous record keeping of various laboratory activities
To perform any other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with grade and experience

Qualifications and background:
GCSE (grade C and above) in Maths and English (orequivalent)
GCSE (grade C and above) in a science subject (orequivalent)
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Ability to maintain accurate records
Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
Computer literate including word processing andspreadsheets.
Ability to handle confidential information (eg patientdata) with complete discretion
Self-motivated and able to work autonomously and problem solve in an ever-changing and fast-paced work environment
