JOB TITLE: Route Coordinator

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Transportation Routing Coordinator is responsible for coordinating routes of pupil transportation for regular and special needs programs district wide to ensure safe efficient timely and economical services. The Transportation Routing Coordinator is responsible for the training and appraisal of the direct reports as well as providing assistance to McKinney Vento Stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university or
- 5 years experience with the pupil transportation routing and GPS systems
- Possess or the ability to obtain a Class B CDL with P & S endorsements
- Possess or obtain a Texas School Bus Driver Certification
- Ability to pass DOT required drug and alcohol screenings
- Ability to obtain annual Texas DPS school bus driver medical certification
- Acceptable driving record in accordance with the requirements for Texas school bus drivers
- Three years Transportation Supervisor experience
- Three years transportation routing experience
Preferred:
- TAPT Specialist Certification (or above)
- Transfinder University
- Knowledge of McKinney-Vento Laws and Guidelines
- Knowledge of mapping in routing software
- Knowledge and experience with assessing and re-writing hazardous boundaries
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Use routing software to build and modify routes
- Make sound decisions regarding best practices with minimal oversight
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Instruct coach and motivate direct reports
- Efficient computer skills
- Effective oral written and interpersonal communication skills
- Follow and receive verbal and written instructions
- Must be able to read and interpret route sheets as well as read and use a map
- Apply knowledge of special education laws and best practices into routing
- Recommend and enforce department and district procedures as related to pupil transportation
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Align the major functions of the assignment with district goals such that all students succeed.
- Layout and schedule all district bus routes in accordance to District guidelines
- Participate in departmental recruiting and orientation efforts
- Observe coach train and evaluate the routing team
- Provide recommendations for departmental budget needs within area of department responsibility
- Receive and address customer service concerns within assigned area of departmental responsibility
- Ensure routes are written in such a way to achieve on time arrivals daily
- Ensure all features of the software are functioning correctly
- Maintain positive public relations with department staff district staff and community
- Hire train and supervise direct-reports ensuring that all routes are covered efficiently on a daily basis
- Ensure all necessary fields in the routing software are completed correctly and updated as needed; including but not limited to bell times campus names grade levels and special programs
- Manage and update the main routing assignment boards
- Ensure all maps in routing software are maintained accordingly by routing team
- Collaborate with dispatch to ensure all routes are being properly assigned
- Ensure all mid-days vocational shuttles early childhood runs tutorial runs extended day runs and extra assignments including McKinney Vento routes are maintained accordingly by routing team
- Oversee McKinney Vento routes mileage and costs and provide guidance to routing team assigned to these routes
- Ensure that all maps are updated in the routing software
- Prepare reports and provide data for state and federal reports
- Assist with collecting eligible ridership rosters
- Review and revise list of areas identified as hazardous
- Design and implement processes to effectively and efficiently meet ever-changing challenges
- Serve a lead in-house trainer with respect to best practices in route coverage and substitutions
- Promote a positive district climate through effective team building
- Willing to work flexible and prolonged hours weekends and holidays
- Report for work consistently and adhere to established routes and schedules as assigned arrange appointments and personal business so as not to interfere with scheduled duties
- Perform all other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee Routing Department
- Coordinate operations between dispatchers and supplemental service specialists
EQUIPMENT USED:
Operates a school bus van or car. Also operates fuel pumps two-way radio and computer and office equipment.
