Job Description

Consumer Indirect Underwriter III

Job Type: Full-Time- Remote in Dallas Area

Exemption Type: Non-Exempt

Wage Amount: $32.14 hourly Minimum

Primary Functions

The primary purpose of this position is to support A Federal Credit Unions indirect lending program by underwriting indirect loan applications and assisting with dealer relations by providing outstanding service to dealership partners. This position has the authority to make loan decisions within established guidelines and is responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of all services and operations of the Credit Union as well as complying with legal requirements lending regulations and internal policies and procedures. This role will serve as a subject matter expert for indirect underwriting and assist leadership in the supervision coaching training and mentoring of Level I and Level II team members.

Employee/Department Support

  • Monitor employee performance issues and conduct one-on-one conversations to identify and resolve concerns.
  • Provide performance feedback to the Consumer Underwriting & Dealer Relations Manager.
  • Train coach and mentor Level I and II team members in underwriting dealer relations products policies and credit principles.
  • Manage application queues and assignments to ensure timely decisions.
  • Underwrite applications for dealership Finance Managers General Managers and AFCU employees.
  • Assist with call monitoring reporting timekeeping and performance metrics.
  • Mentor team members in dealer district management and onboarding.
  • Conduct team member loan review evaluations.
  • Analyze production/portfolio reports and recommend actions based on trends.
  • Lead team huddles and monthly dialogues.
  • Prepare and present monthly coaching cards.
  • Maintain department resources including procedures and training documents.
  • Make override or exception decisions within guidelines.

Indirect Underwriting

  • Review loan applications including credit history income and stability factors.
  • Meet or exceed expectations for volume approval ratios delinquency and loss ratios.
  • Make decisions on high-limit and complex applications.
  • Work underwriting queues and ensure timely decisions.
  • Contact dealers and applicants to verify information.
  • Review tax returns and supporting documents.
  • Follow fraud and red flag procedures.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for loan policies and decisions.
  • Support team members with daily tasks and member requests.
  • Negotiate credit terms with dealers.
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Resolve member loan and dealer transaction issues.
  • Support underwriting for direct vehicle unsecured and home equity loans.
  • Assist leadership with complex situations and portfolio reviews.
  • Support collections efforts including straw purchases and defaults.
  • Assist in loan modifications and workouts.

Dealer Relations Support

  • Provide excellent service to dealers via phone and email.
  • Educate dealers on AFCUs indirect lending program.
  • Participate in sales and development interactions with dealers.
  • Authorize exceptions and manage dealer relationships.
  • Analyze district scorecards and portfolio trends.
  • Present monthly district results and strategy recommendations.
  • Work with dealers to improve application quality and profitability.
  • Recommend program changes including rates and compensation structures.
  • Conduct dealer site visits and due diligence reviews.

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Resolve funding issues with the indirect processing team.
  • Maintain job knowledge through training and procedure reviews.
  • Participate in internal meetings and organizational projects.
  • Represent AFCU at community and educational events.
  • Conduct quarterly dialogues with direct manager.
  • Complete annual regulatory training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of financial institution experience including consumer lending.
  • Minimum three years of consumer underwriting experience (vehicle and unsecured loans).
  • Minimum two years of dealer relationship management experience.
  • One year of indirect vehicle processing experience preferred.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of consumer lending products guidelines and laws.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting concepts and credit analysis.
  • Knowledge of indirect funding processes and dealership operations.
  • Understanding of loan portfolio management and mortgage underwriting basics.
  • Familiarity with consumer lending regulations (Reg B ECOA FACTA FCRA Reg Z MLA TILA).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism diplomacy courtesy and tact.
  • Strong problem-solving and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Excellent research and organizational skills.
  • Comprehensive math skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
  • Ability to travel and work outside of home/office up to 25% of the time.
  • General knowledge of operational internal and security controls applicable to a retail banking environment.
  • Certifications/Registrations

    This position requires registration as a Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) and Registry on an annual basis in addition to maintaining updates as needed. Initial registration is required immediately upon hire into this position. Failure to register or maintain a current registry or any criminal activity that would bar continued participation as a MLO may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

    Physical Functions

  • Must have the ability/stamina to work at least 40 hours a week.
  • Will frequently reach feel bend stoop carry finely manipulate and key in data.
  • Must be able to communicate heavily through telephone e-mail and in-person communications.
  • Must be able to engage in problem-solving skills to help identify and solve potential issues in the field.
