About this Unit

We are a 13-bed ICU with the addition of a 4-bed surgical SICU at a Level 3 Trauma Hospital. We are a unit dedicated to innovation and process improvement which lead to the most beneficial patient outcomes. Furthermore the CCU strives for excellence in workplace satisfaction. All staff members are involved within shared governance programs and are empowered to make several decisions that impact on the unit and patient care. These decisions include but are not limited to (scheduling staffing workflow infection prevention alterations in patient care models teaching educational classes and participating in multidisciplinary team peer reviews). The CCU patient population includes a variety of high acuity patients that require intensive monitoring and critical thinking. We are looking for experienced and new RNs that are willing to add to the exceptional team dynamic and culture that is present in the CCU. Furthermore RNs that are wishing to increase their clinical knowledge and skills to improve health instill humanity and inspire hope for all those you may encounter here at Grosse Pointe.

General Summary:

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse the Critical Care Technician is responsible for direct patient care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles. The Critical Care Technician will provide care according to Corewell Health policies and procedures

Essential Duties:

1. Performs routine bedside nursing activities including ambulating moving and turning patients assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices bathing making patient beds.

2. Performs higher level of patient care tasks as prescribed by established competencies and as delegated by the supervising professional Registered Nurse in accordance with departmental policies and procedures which includes starting peripheral IVs lab specimen collection/draws non- pharmacological and non-sterile dressing changes performing/set up ECGs and oral care/ suctioning on mechanically ventilated patients.

3. Maintains critical care equipment and supplies as directed by unit management.

4. Maintains current knowledge/certification.

5. Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety department/service safety and specific job-related hazards.

6. Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Blood borne and Airborne Pathogens.

7. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients families visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional responsible and courteous environment.

8. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the departments/units ability to meet its goals and objective.

Preferred qualifications:

- Experience in critical care emergency department or EMT

- High school graduate or equivalent

- Current CNA certificate

- Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately

- Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals

- Ability to trouble shoot and problem-solve various unit equipment and supply issues

- Ability to manage multiple diverse tasks in an inherently high-acuity high-pressure environment.

- Knowledge of basic medical terminology

- Basic computer knowledge

Required qualifications:

- Basic Life Support certificate through American Heart Association or Red Cross.

- Requires a minimum six months exhibited performance as a nursing assistant or other inpatient caregiver experience urgent care caregiver experience or a Nursing Student.

Working Conditions:

A. Physical Effort:

Work requires continuous physical effort; including walking standing for extended periods heavy lifting of patients pushing and pulling carts and wheelchairs.

B. Work Environment:

Work will be in the critical care patient care environment with ongoing exposure to unpleasant odors needle punctures and inherent risk of infectious diseases. Continuous exposure to accidents while working with equipment. Continuous exposure to injury from aggressive patients.
