Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Senior Underground Geotechnical Engineer the Underground Geotechnical Technician plays a key support role in underground ground control execution. This position is responsible for assisting with geotechnical monitoring quality assurance testing and data collection to ensure the stability and safety of underground excavations. The role contributes to the effective execution of geotechnical programs through field support instrumentation and sample collection and testing helping maintain safe and efficient mining practices. The ideal candidate will be trained on the key responsibilities.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation calibration and troubleshooting of geotechnical instruments such as MPBX seismographs microseismic sensors or related monitoring equipment.
  • Support underground development and stope blast vibration monitoring program.
  • Ensure the proper collection and documentation of QAQC data.
  • Conduct or support strength testing for grout shotcrete and backfill and assist with bolt pull testing.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the geotechnical database ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
  • Support laboratory mix design trials for shotcrete and backfill to validate recipes and performance.
  • Assist in preparing QAQC reports including test results from bolt pull testing and material strength testings.
  • Perform visual inspections of backfill batches to assess quality and communicate any necessary adjustments to the mix or process.
  • Support moisture content testing campaigns to support shotcrete and backfill mix design improvements.
  • Assist in calculating and tracking backfill volumes to support stope backfill design and optimization.
  • Perform other related duties as required in support of the geotechnical engineering team.
  • Health Safety and Environment

    • Comply with OceanaGold Health and Safety Policy and Environment Policy.
    • Promoting safety awareness and environmental responsibility amongst company and contract personnel.
    • Report all personal injuries and incidents and assisting with investigations.
    • Prepare and maintain an active register identifying all geotechnical risks and opportunities for the project.
    • Actively supporting and participate in safety and environmental initiatives.
    • Accepting accountability to ensure personal safety and the safety of others whilst protecting the environment.
    • Monitor the reporting of workplace incidents and hazards to ensure effective risk mitigation is maintained.
    • Undertake workplace inspections and audits to ensure site standards are being adhered to.
    • Support incident investigations that occur within area of control.

Qualifications :

Physical Requirements

    • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand sit demonstrate manual dexterity climb stairs talk hear and see.
    • Must be able to work 10-hour shift work.
    • Must be able to climb 25 feet vertical ladder sections unaided.
    • Must be able to work at heights on elevated platforms.
    • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the workday.
    • Work will be conducted in open pit underground or dam infrastructure environments which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
    • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment including hart hat hearing protection safety glasses safety footwear and as needed respirator rubber steel-toe boots protective clothing gloves and any other protective equipment as required.

Qualifications

    • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required. Some college education is preferred.
    • At least one (1) year of experienced in underground mining environment.
    • Experience in managing databases and troubleshoot field instrumentations preferred.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel Word or Powerpoint will be advantageous.
    • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Testing certifications will be advantageous but not required.
    • Ability to operate production support equipment preferred but not required.
