Job Description

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) provides for the safe efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and maintains and enhances the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of City residents. DOT oversees one of the most complex urban transportation networks in the world. DOTs staff manages an annual operating budget of $1.1 billion along with 6300 miles of streets and highways over 12000 miles of sidewalk nearly 800 bridges and tunnels including the iconic East River bridges and the Staten Island Ferry. DOT staff also design bicycle facilities bus lanes and public plazas.

DOT seeks a highly organized and detail-oriented attorney with extensive transactional experience to provide high-level legal contract support of DOTs major initiatives projects and programs. Under general supervision of the Deputy General Counsel with wide latitude for independent judgment the selected candidate will be responsible for assisting in the development drafting negotiating and reviewing of DOTs vast and varied contracts that are necessary to advance DOTs mission as well as providing legal counsel to the respective contract administrative teams. The successful candidate will have an ability to handle a high volume of matters and function under tight time constraints. Strong communication skills both oral and written are required as well as the ability to prioritize projects.

The anticipated assignments will include involvement in large and complex procurements such as multimillion dollar design and construction contracts as well as other ancillary legal documents. The anticipated assignments will involve various sources of project funding and the attorney will be responsible to advise on legal compliance and the sufficiency of DOTs procurements and contracts.

The attorney may also represent the agency in contract claims throughout the Citys alternative dispute process in consultation and coordination with the Citys Corporation Counsel.

The ideal candidate should have significant experience developing drafting negotiating and reviewing municipal contracts including those related to the procurement of large construction projects and supporting consultant work.

Qualifications :

Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible relevant satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys in an administrative managerial or executive capacity or performing highly complex and significant legal work.

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
