Job Description

Under general supervision an employee in this class performs and directs others in performing skilled installation alteration maintenance and repair of electrical wiring apparatus and equipment used in communications lighting and power including but not limited to high voltage switch gear transformers transmission lines for low voltage distribution secondary sub-panels alarm and signal circuits electrical power plant control systems elevators and standby generators according to specifications in the National and State Electrical Codes and National Electrical Safety Code. An employee in this class trains and directs the work of licensed electricians laborers and maintenance employees and performs related work as required.
This position is considered essential during natural and man-made disasters and during inclement weather. Employee will report for duty as directed by their supervisor and is subject to recall during these types of events.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS
The specific tasks which are listed for the principal responsibilities are among those which are the most common or frequent. It is understood that other tasks are also required to be performed and that this position involves all tasks which are required or desirable to be done in connection with the performance of each responsibility; whether or not such tasks are specifically stated described or listed.
Schedules distributes balances and guides the work activities of assigned staff in accordance with established workflow/assignment requirements to assist supervisory staff in the timely accomplishment of assigned workload.

  • Coordinating electrical projects with other skilled crafts such as plumbers carpenters painters by modifying work plans to improve efficiency and by recommending additional employees for the project to ensure timely completion.

Monitors and reports on the work activities of licensed electricians less skilled laborers and maintenance employees to ensure the timely completion of electrical projects by applying for necessary permits.

  • Determine the most efficient work procedures and techniques.

  • Instructing others and ensuring use of appropriate procedures and equipment and compliance with safety standards.

  • Inspecting the quality of work performed by others.

  • Filing requests by the Board of Electricity and/or local subdivision.

  • Recording hours worked and materials and equipment used.

Priority: Percent of Time: 10%

Review plans blueprints and specifications. Prepare sketches plans and material lists for electrical projects to understand the scope of the project and to recommend changes.

  • Reading the plans blueprints and specifications.

  • Discuss them with the supervisor by researching the plans and specifications of previously completed electrical projects.

  • Defining the detailed tasks of the project and laying out the work.

Priority: Percent of Time: 15%
Estimates costs for time labor and materials to ensure that the supervisor can prioritize budget and schedule electrical projects by determining the type and amount of supplies necessary to complete the project according to codes.

  • Develop material lists.

  • Select the best work procedures by determining equipment and labor requirements

  • Requisitioning and checking necessary parts supplies and equipment.

Installs adds to alters repairs and maintains electrical wiring systems and fixtures such as boxes conduit outlets switch panels incandescent and fluorescent light fixtures power plant controls elevators etc. in campus buildings to ensure that all systems are operational according to State Electrical Code and the Underwriters rules for electrical installations.

  • Selecting the necessary supplies and equipment to complete the project most efficiently and in compliance with codes.

  • Identifying the most direct and appropriate route to run the new wiring and laying out work.

  • Troubleshooting sources of electrical power disruption by testing circuits for continuity and proper connections

  • Testing repairing or replacing power plant control devices by implementing preventive maintenance programs

  • Following Safety standards and procedures to prevent injuries.

Priority: Percent of Time: 25%

Installs repairs maintains tests and inspects electrical equipment and appliances such as washers dryers disposals dishwashers water heaters and other electric motor-driven equipment to ensure that that they are in safe and economical operating condition and all emergency repairs are quickly completed.

  • Installing the equipment according to the manufacturers specifications and the underwriters rules for electrical installation.

  • Testing electrical circuits

  • Replacing burned out elements in heating equipment

  • Repairing or replacing electric motors.

  • Implementing preventative maintenance programs

  • Following safety standards and procedures to prevent injuries.

Priority: Percent of Time: 5%

Maintains hand and power tools to ensure safe efficient use for current and future electrical projects by inspecting their physical condition.

  • Repairing or replacing worn or broken parts on power equipment.

  • Ensuring an adequate supply of electrical wire conduit switch panels and lighting fixtures for immediate repair projects.

Work with Energy Management System & event scheduling.

  • Minor repairs and trouble shooting.

Priority: Percent of Time: 10%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Construction plans blueprints and electrical specifications sufficient to interpret modify and follow them to complete the installation alteration maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment sufficient to advise other licensed electricians on more effective techniques and work procedures to complete electrical projects.

  • State and national electrical codes and national electrical safety code and standard electrical practices techniques materials and tools sufficient to ensure that work and materials comply with codes to instruct others and verify that their work meets code and to select appropriate supplies materials and work methods and apply them to electrical projects.

  • Knowledge skills and experience are needed in the areas of personal computers and energy management systems with DDC and pneumatic controls that are common to heating cooling and ventilation. This position requires a Class A Master Electricians license and must be able to perform all work according to the National Electric Code.

  • Using hand tools soldering and brazing are other desirable skills.

  • Shop math sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.

  • This position requires a cooperative working relationship with all other tradesmen as well as faculty staff students and on occasion the public. Most communication with these people is verbal.

  • The employee shall follow all safety rules and regulations and take all necessary precautions to prevent injury and illness.

  • Lifting stair and ladder climbing are involved with tasks to be performed.
