Job Description

The Agriculture & Nutrition Specialist is responsible for maintaining the crop production and visual aesthetic of the Mini Farm and providing agricultural education to the students of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and surrounding community. A variety of crops that tailor to the needs and interests of the community will be produced on a weekly basis year-round utilizing two high tunnels for winter production. Close communication and active involvement in the kitchen operations is essential including supporting the planning provision and prep of farm products as assigned by the Food Program Director.
Essential Functions:
  • Maintain the 15000 square foot Mini Farm keeping the area both productive and aesthetically pleasing through weeding watering planting harvesting and mulching. The site includes 70 varieties of culinary crops: 30 varieties of vegetables 25 varieties of herbs 16 varieties of fruits and 2 varieties of nuts plus an additional 30 varieties of pollinator plants which aid in the productivity of the crops.
  • Maintain daily/annual harvest record to track output of the Mini Farm by crop. Note where the crops were delivered: CAFE lobby refrigerator agricultural classes etc.
  • Provide fresh produce to the CAFE Program to use in their meals with particular emphasis on greens to go with chicken salad every month of the year and summer crops that can be provided weekly from June - August.
  • Build relationships with the CAFE Program to increase the amount of produce going on trays.
  • Teach agricultural classes once per week or more to satisfy educational grant requirements with a particular focus on Snacktivities to provide students with the Why behind the Mini Farm.
  • Utilize Integrated Pest Management techniques to limit crop damage and chemical use. No synthetic insecticides should be used on any of the crops.
  • Identify pests and diseases on crops and take the appropriate management controls to maintain the health and productivity of the Mini Farm
  • Operate tractor tiller wheelbarrows hand tools and power tools as needed to move compost mulch soil build or fix beds and teach students about various tools and their use.
  • Attend soccer Saturdays swim meets and other events that would have people walking around the Mini Farm to help protect the space and also promote the program to the community.
  • Attend 21st Century Family Engagement Events to connect with students families and continue to tailor the output of the Mini Farm to the needs of the community
  • Attend monthly Farm to School Committee meetings online to build rapport with the Department of Education promote the Mini Farm and find opportunities
  • Assist in answering grant application questions and grant reports attending webinars and meetings as needed.
  • Attend the annual Seaford High School Advisory Brunch to build relationships with the SHS FFA and culinary departments which facilitate in arranging field trips with those classes and Middle School Classes
  • Write a monthly Program Report and Program Goals email to the Grants Manager to summarize how many students received classes how many classes total events attended participants reached pounds harvested maintenance
  • Maintain and build relationships with local community organizations such as the Seaford Spade & Trowel Garden Club VISTA Seaford Community of Hope etc.
  • Actively support the ongoing planning and implementation of the Farm to Kitchen project both on the farm site and in the self-prep kitchen.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years of experience in the field of agriculture and nutrition programming
  • Communication skills commensurate to being comfortable in addressing groups of people in promotion of the Mini Farm operation.
  • Experience in farm maintenance and operations.
  • Possess a valid drivers license with less than 5 points
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently lifts carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 60 pounds when preparing the room for instruction.
  • Typically bends stoops walks and sometimes run on a regular basis while interacting with children in various activities throughout the day.
  • Ability to perform duties effectively under stressful conditions; ability to make decisions quickly and accurately with tact and impartiality
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • High energy comfort with multi-tasking able to work with numerous deadlines.
  • Reliable transportation required.
Work Hours:Monday -Friday between 7am- 4:30pm
potential for some evening & weekend hours based on the Grants Department/food program and organizations needs.
