Job Description

Organization Summary: Hearts United for Animals (HUA) is a nationally recognized no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary situated amid the scenic rolling hills of southeast Nebraska. Founded with a commitment to alleviating animal suffering HUA goes beyond traditional sheltering by employing a comprehensive model that includes the rescue rehabilitation and lifelong rehoming of dogs and cats. Our rescue efforts extend nationwide-ensuring that animals in need from across the country receive the care dignity and respect they deserve. Job Summary: The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive responsible for leading the organizations strategic direction operations financial sustainability and development efforts. In addition to overseeing rescue rehabilitation and rehoming initiatives the ED provides leadership for fundraising and donor engagement. The ED works closely with the Board of Directors staff and community stakeholders to fulfill the organizations mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Organizational Leadership & Operations
  • Provide visionary leadership to ensure programmatic operational and financial excellence.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations ensuring compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Lead and support a dedicated team fostering a collaborative and mission-driven workplace culture.
  • Lead a group of stakeholders in the development and implementation of strategic plans in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Represent the organization publicly strengthening relationships with community members donors and partners.
Development & Fundraising
  • Lead development strategy overseeing fundraising initiatives donor cultivation grants and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with individual donors foundations and corporate partners.
  • Develop impactful campaigns and events to enhance community engagement and financial support.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to ensure diverse sustainable revenue streams.
  • Oversee marketing and communications efforts to effectively share the organizations story and impact.
Financial & Administrative Oversight
  • Manage budgeting financial reporting and operational sustainability.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of resources while maximizing program effectiveness.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors on governance compliance and strategic financial decisions.
Program Development and Implementation

Oversee planning implementation and evaluation of the shelters programs and services.
Ensure that the programs are aligned with the mission vision and goals of the organization.
Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with other organizations to enhance the impact of the shelter.
Ensure that clinic services costs and expansions meet the clinic objectives in the 5-year strategic plan.
Community Engagement and Public Relations
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization.
  • Enhance the shelters public image to expand interest and support.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with a variety of organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the shelters mission.
  • Actively engage and energize volunteers board members event committees alumni partnering organizations and donors.
  • Represent Hearts United for Animals in a professional positive inclusive way in both private and public settings both on and off duty.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelors Degree or above in Nonprofit Management Business Communications or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit development fundraising or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising donor relations and development initiatives.
  • Strong leadership and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and organizational sustainability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for the organizations mission vision and values.
