Job Description

Job Title: Surgical Technologist
Location: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda MD
Start Date: October 1 2025
Work Schedule: 8 12-hour shifts between; may include weekends and Federal holidays

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors Degree Registered Nursing.
  • Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of two years of current experience as a PACU RN in an inpatient Phase 1 recovery unit or at least one year of experience in Critical Care.
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) as required by assigned MTF Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Board Certification: The institution will be from a National League of Nursing (NLN) approved program. Successfully pass the NCLEX exam. Copy of Certificate and license required. Have successfully completed a Post-Anesthesia Care course/training program or is nationally certified as a Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CP AN).
  • Licensure/Registration: Possess current active valid unrestricted license in at least one U.S. State District of Columbia Commonwealth Territory or jurisdiction

Responsibilities

  • Utilize appropriate medical equipment and supplies with clear communication to patients families and staff
  • Provide age-appropriate nursing care across the lifespan: infants to geriatrics
  • Apply principles of growth and development relevant to each patient population
  • Use the nursing process to assess plan implement and evaluate care
  • Manage potentially critical patients for up to two hours
  • Understand and address a wide range of medical conditions and preventive care needs
  • Deliver nursing care for patients with special needs including paralysis amputations and expressive disorders
  • Assist with various patient transfers (e.g. bed-to-chair wheelchair-to-commode)
  • Perform physical tasks including walking 500 yards lifting 30 lbs. and pushing occupied wheelchairs or gurneys
  • Accurately prepare and administer medications
  • Read and interpret electronic medical records and medication labels
  • Care for critically ill patients using invasive lines and advanced monitoring
  • Respond to life-threatening conditions; manage vasoactive medication titration and operate specialized medical equipment (e.g. PCA pumps ventilators cardiac monitors)
