As the Principal Mechanic you will lead the delivery of high-quality maintenance servicing and repair of the Shires diverse fleet of vehicles plant and equipment. This hands-on role requires a strong technical background and a proactive approach to mechanical reliability safety and performance.
Working closely with the mechanical team you will oversee daily workshop operations ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications and maintain accurate service records. You will play a key role in supporting asset management functions contributing to the timely renewal and replacement of assets and driving continuous improvement in maintenance systems.

- Ensure compliance with the Local Government Act (WA) 1995 and any relevant legislation.
- Carry out high-standard repairs and maintenance to ensure the Shires fleet and equipment remain reliable safe and operational at all times.
- Investigate complex mechanical faults using diagnostic equipment and technical knowledge to reduce downtime and improve asset availability.
- Assist in the planning review and continuous improvement of preventative maintenance schedules and fleet servicing programs in line with OEM requirements and operational priorities.
- Regularly update and assess assets under management maintain the asset replacement program and provide documented recommendations for timely renewals aligned with operational needs.
- Provide clear direction and effective oversight to the mechanical team to ensure maintenance activities are delivered safely efficiently and in line with strategic asset objectives.
- Manage both planned and reactive work orders to improve resource utilisation minimise downtime and ensure timely completion of maintenance activities.
- Lead ongoing improvements in asset management practices including the regular update and optimisation of the MEX maintenance system to support informed decision-making.
- Ensure the workshop is maintained in a clean safe and organised condition with tools and equipment securely stored and readily accessible.
- Ensure all maintenance repairs and inspections are documented in line with recordkeeping requirements and audit standards.
- Safely operate and maintain heavy and light plant machinery and equipment to support the delivery of infrastructure and operational services.
- Advise on and manage procurement of parts tools and equipment to ensure availability compliance and alignment with operational needs.
- Provide input into fleet acquisition and maintenance budgeting including parts forecasting and lifecycle planning.
- Work alongside the Senior Mechanic to provide on-the-job training and mentorship to apprentices and trainees contributing to skill development and succession planning.
- Carry out other duties aligned with your skills and experience as required to support team flexibility and operational needs.
Work Health & Safety Responsibilities
- To take reasonable care for their own safety and health and to avoid harming the safety and health of other people through any act or omission at Shire workplaces. And as relevant:
- Proactively comply with all Shire WHS Policies Procedures and Guidelines Practice duties and other relevant conditions. As well as with the WA WHS Act 2020 WHS (General) Regulations 2022 all other relevant Regulations Codes of Practice and Australian Standards. implemented and are being followed by employees.
- As far as reasonably possible comply with instructions given by their employer or an authorised person in the interests of safety and health and in accordance with the WHS Act.
- Must report to their manager supervisor WHS Representative PC&S and/or other relevant contact person work related injuries near misses and any hazards at the workplace that they cannot correct themselves.
- Must use store and maintain personal protective equipment as properly instructed and not damage or misuse any equipment or facilities provided in the interests of safety and health.
- Participate in and where possible provide leadership for a continuous improvement culture of safety where best practice initiatives are entrenched in daily business activities.
Essential Criteria:
- Demonstrated experience with fault diagnosis repair servicing parts ordering and maintenance of vehicles fixed and mobile plant and earth moving equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to follow safety requirements in the use of machinery and personal safety and to ensure workshop operations meet Work Health & Safety requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
- Effective time management and organisation skills.
- Experience in maintaining accurate service and maintenance records.
- Willingness and ability to provide mentorship and support to apprentices and trainees.
- Experience with procurement processes including preparing specifications or evaluating fleet options.
- Ability to work effectively and productively within a team or independently.
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous experience with Local Government
Licenses Registrations Memberships or Qualifications required of the role:
- HR Class Drivers Licence (Western Australia)
- Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology or Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
- Motor Vehicle Repairer Certificate.

Remuneration and Benefits:
The successful applicant will join the Infrastructure Services with a starting salary from $113548.27 per annum plus allowances (if eligible) and superannuation.
