Job Goal(s):
The primary job goal of the LEA Accounting Specialist is to manage the day-to-day
fiscal accounting of the district to assure compliance with all State and Federal accounting practices for Michigan Public Schools.
Salary Range:
$50000 - $65000 (Commensurate with Experience & Qualifications)
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Associates degree or equivalent required
Bachelors degree in accounting or equivalent preferred
Work Experience:
Three years of accounting experience or equivalent preferably in a school district
Skills:
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles and financial reporting
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Office applications and other technology.
- Proficient in applying school fund accounting principles
- Excellent attention to detail accuracy and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Strong customer service and communication skills to effectively interact with employees and vendors
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintain all financial records and perform general accounting duties including journal entries bank reconciliations cash transfers cash management fixed assets etc. in compliance with the guidelines from the Michigan Department of Education and Governmental Accounting Standards Board.
- Provide support and approve all district paid invoices travel reimbursements and purchasing card transactions
- Assist with invoices to customers and local districts and monitor payments received.
- Must carry out all responsibilities with awareness of all requirements and standards established by the Board of Education.
- Assist with federal state and local grants including budget accounting internal controls funding requests and reporting.
- Oversee daily transactions and review for accuracy authorized approvals and documentation to ensure proper recording of financial transactions and the integrity of the districts accounting and payroll record system.
- Gather data and assist with annual required state reporting (FIDExcess Cost Report Final Expenditure Reports etc.)
- Perform month end closing activities and reconcile bank accounts monthly.
- Provide accounting related support to grants and year end accounting audit preparation
- Understand and reconcile state and federal grants.
- Enter daily monthly and year end journal entries.
- Work with district accounting staff to identify and modify system procedures to improve productivity
- Assist and approve W-2 year-end statements.
- Approve annual 1099 and related schedules for IRS reporting.
- Assist and work with local school district business personnel as needed.
- Perform additional tasks responsibilities and duties as assigned by the LEA Business Manager.
- Valid drivers license required.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
