Job Description

Responsible for incorporating the Reggio Emilia Philosophy in Chicago Commons educational programming assisting with planning and facilitating professional development opportunities. The primary focus of this role is centered on explorations studies emergent curriculum and the image of the child. Must be able to travel to various Chicago Commons locations.

The Reggio-inspired approach to education is where children families and teachers work together to create a dynamic and problem-solving approach to learning. Our teachers aim to empower children to explore and learn in a unique environment that encourages childs critical thinking and creativity. Our early childhood program serves as the backbone for many at-risk Chicago communities including West Humboldt Park Pilsen Bronzeville and New City/Back of the Yards. High rates of poverty and limited educational and economic resources impact these neighborhoods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for assisting teaching staff in planning and facilitating childrens individual and group learning experiences.
  • Supports Chicago Commons adaptation of the Reggio Emilia Approach.
  • Assist center staff with appropriate documentation and exhibition of childrens work.
  • May participate in tours of Chicago Commons facilities as requested in support of fundraising activities through social enterprise (i.e. individual tours group tours presentations and consultations with other professionals or organizations).
  • Responsible for obtaining materials for projects related to documentation or explorations.
  • Creates developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children 6 weeks 12 years of age.
  • Works with families on exploration and continuation of project-related interests.
  • Ensure Chicago Commons studio spaces are well-maintained and safe for childrens use.
  • Helps teaching staff become adept at using the Chicago Commons studio spaces.
  • Represents Chicago Commons at meetings and maintains external relationships with the community.
  • Responsible for creating the layout and design that would best support the display of childrens projects and explorations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelors Degree (B.A.) in Fine Arts or related degree with 3 years of Art Education experience OR Bachelors Degree (B.A.) in Early Childhood/Elementary Education with 3 years of Art Education experience.

  • Must have strong knowledge of Reggio Emilia Philosophy and Early Childhood Education.
  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to work both individually and as part of a team.
  • Must be comfortable and skilled in taking initiative problem-solving and making sound decisions.
  • Must be able to multi-task and adapt to various classroom environments and interact with children of all ages.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop grow and maintain professional relationships with others.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to read and write English proficiently. Spanish fluency is a plus. Candidates must regularly operate a word-processing system and therefore must be able to read produce and transmit data on such a system. Candidates must be comfortable using digital platforms to create printed materials for program use.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Candidates must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and are frequently required to stand walk reach with hands and arms and stoop kneel crouch or crawl.
