Summary :
The Materials Lead/Surgical Technician is accountable and responsible for performing duties and tasks as required to ensure safe cost-effective and efficient medical supply purchasing consistent pre-determined inventory levels along with appropriate storage of all items received. The Materials Manager works closely with the Administrator and clinical staff in all peri-operative areas and serves as the liaison to ThedaCare Supply Chain and vendors. This individual routinely handles inquiries and appointments from various vendor representatives to ensure the highest level of cost-effectiveness and customer service on an ongoing basis. In addition scrubbing for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team; this individual also prepares and maintains supplies instruments and equipment related to these procedures
Job Description:
**This is for our new Ambulatory Surgery Center which will be connected to our hospital. ** Surgeries include but are not limited to GI OR Pre-Op/PACU SPD/etc. Primary day hours with the flexibility to adjust to fit business needs**
Quality / Safety / Regulatory Compliance
- Maintains compliance with established policies and procedures pertaining to Materials protocols.
- Ensures the delivery of effective and efficient management of medical supplies needed in various peri-operative areas.
- Serves as a member of the Quality Committee and participates in the quality improvement process.
- Interacts with the Administrator and fellow staff to enhance communication and problem solving.
- Accounts for any occurrence reports that pertain to materials management processes including those involving patient care (i.e. equipment failure).
- Aids ensure the confidentiality security and integrity of information in the medical record is maintained.
Daily Operations
Materials Lead:
- Provides input/assistance to the Administrator annually for the medical supply budget cost containment and capital expenditure.
- Develops and implements processes to maintain an accurate perpetual inventory and system.
- Arranges for the arrival of supplies to meet surgery schedules in a timely manner.
- Examine supplies for defects and ensure supplies are satisfactory and up to the proper level of standard for usage and effectiveness
- Responsible for maintaining adequate surgical supplies instruments equipment linens and other surgery center materials in an appropriate location and manner.
- Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective and/or preventive measures
- Adheres to written policies of the Surgery Center
- Participates in and supports Quality Assurance and Improvement Program
- Participates in task forces and committees as assigned
- Demonstrates willingness to learn and accept changes
- Responsible for completing mandatory classes related to job responsibilities at the Surgery Center (OSHA and other safety related classes)
- Participates in the orientation of new employees as directed
- Interfaces with the Business Office and Administrator to ensure accurate recording of material purchases in the financial accounting and Inventory system
- Works closely with clinical staff to assure supplies used are captured accurately and identifies cost containment opportunities.
- Responsible for other functions as assigned by the Administrator or Director of Nursing.
- Responsible for Quality Indicator studies as assigned by the Administrator and Director of Nursing.
Surgical Technician:
- Participates as a team member in support of the total peri-operative process.
- Effectively organizes time equipment supplies and personnel.
- Use instrumentation and equipment effectively by anticipating surgeons needs and providing appropriate care.
- Performs surgical team functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Assists with the receiving and storage of medical supplies.
- Maintains order and cleanliness of the operating room suite in accordance with environmental policies and procedures.
- Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each approved procedure.
- Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians preference cards.
- Inspects instruments and equipment for proper working conditions.
- Follows principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures.
- Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure.
- Arranges instruments according to given procedure.
- Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays.
- Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and acts according to policy.
- Correctly uses decontaminates and sterilizes instruments and equipment according to manufacturers instructions for use.
- Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety.
- Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure.
- Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons preference cards.
- Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician.
Customer and Employee Satisfaction
- Promotes positive and effective working relationships among Center staff.
- Assumes responsibility for patient physician and staff satisfaction as it pertains to materials management.
- Demonstrates customer-friendliness and effective communicative techniques with all vendor representatives (including those involved with purchased services).
- Responds appropriately to physician patient and visitor complaints and communicates this information to the Director of Nursing in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Education:
- Completion of an appropriate surgical technician program or previous technician experience of at least two (2) years.
- High School graduate or GED certificate recipient
Preferred:
- An undergraduate degree in business administration or commerce with classes in accounting finance business production and operations preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology medical equipment inventory management systems and supplies
Required Licensure or Certification:
- Current certification as a Surgical Technician from an accredited program preferred
- Current BCLS certification
Type and Length of Experience:
- Previous work experience in an ambulatory surgery setting acute hospital operating room or in a related military medical setting of no less than one (2) years.
- Previous ASC/hospital experience in related fields (Purchasing CS SPD Receiving)
- 1-2 years of experience focusing on cost reduction and inventory control Preferred
Specialized knowledge:
Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages are preferred. Proficient in the use of personal computers; ability to multitask solve problems meet deadlines adapt to changing priorities and situations and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.
Knowledge of state-specific and federal healthcare regulations and standards as these pertain to the clinical areas within an Ambulatory Surgery Center. Maintains familiarity with a variety of surgical instrumentation and equipment along with trouble-shooting skills that are performed in accordance with manufacturers instructions for use
Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Must be detail oriented and organized. High integrity including maintenance of confidential information. Must be able to exercise good judgement and positively influence others. Ability to respond to recalls involving supplies and materials in a timely manner and in accordance with facility policies and procedures.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to walk talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop bend downward at the waist kneel crouch or crawl. Frequent lifting of 25 pounds. Must be able to push pull lift and move patient care equipment and supplies. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close distance (e.g. working on a computer for prolonged periods of time).
