Job Description Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator a Research specialist III is needed to support glycobiology research for the analysis of human and mouse tissues cells and serum. Responsible for supporting sample preparation and analysis for MALDI-glycan imaging PCR/qPCRs Western Blots GlycoTyper cell culture and drug studies.

Job Description

Duties Performed:

30%. Preparation and analysis of human tissues for glycan analysis. This includes cataloging slides that arrive from collaborators performing antigen retrieval of slides preparing slides for glycan imaging using the appropriate methods using an HTX sprayer to apply specific enzymes for analysis and perform MS analysis of tissue. Subsequently and independently perform data analysis to determine which glycans have altered and help in preparation of manuscript.

30%. Preparation of human serum for glycan analysis using the GlycoTyper method. Identify specific antibodies for utilization which includes determining the correct antibodies that can be used on amine reactive slides. Prepare slides for glycan imaging use the HTX sprayer to apply specific enzymes for analysis and perform MS analysis of antibody captured proteins. Subsequently and independently perform data analysis to determine which glycoproteins have altered glycans and and help in preparation of manuscript.

20%. Asist in maintaining mouse colony and genotyping. This job requires the individual to be able to step in and help others in mouse work. There is also the potential that based upon the results this position may require the development of independent mouse work as well.

10% Maintains laboratory equipment by performing checklist systems suitability and required maintenance.

10% Maintain a detailed notebook of experiments performed and location of where data is stored.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelors degree in chemistry biology or other natural life or health care science directly related to the assigned area of research andtwo yearsadvanced journel-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.

Minimum qualifications: MD PhD or BSc

In case of MD or PhD (in Biochemistry molecular/cell biology or related field); having at least one first-author publication in the field of glycobiology.

In case of BSc; experience in Mass Spectrometry glycobiology and utilization of serum tissue from both mouse and humans for analysis.

(Frequent) Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function/distinction. (Continuous) Ability to lift materials up to 20 lbs. unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift and carry 4 liter waste material bottles a distance of 30 feet unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lift and carry 25-30 lbs. jugs of liquid a distance of 100 feet unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift file boxes from floor level to counter tops unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to push/ Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent) Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops 50 lbs. or greater unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors normally. (Continuous) Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous) Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous) Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film etc. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use initially and annually. (Continuous) Additional New Requirements: Ability to work rotating shifts as required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes tools and equipment as required.
