Job Description

Working directly with the Vocational Maintenance Workers the Vocational Maintenance Support Worker (VMSW) has the primary responsibility for property maintenance housekeeping and grounds keeping of all agency properties and designated partner organization properties as identified.


The VMSW receives prioritizes sorts and queues work orders for processing and executes to completion requested work from work orders in collaboration with the Vocational Maintenance Team Members. As an employment support to the team the VMSW builds job skills with the Vocational Maintenance Team through teaching coaching mentoring and modeling required job skills including but not limited to: repairs to buildings or equipment within the skill scope of those available. Those job skills include but are not limited to wall repair painting janitorial groundskeeping repairs to building systems and equipment. A key component of the position is to transfer job skills knowledge to individuals re-entering the workforce building upon any job skills they have currently to meet the operational facility needs of the branch. The VMSW leading the Vocational Maintenance Team will be called upon from time to time to support the branchs activities as it relates to logistical support of its fundraising and advancement activities and any other duties reasonably required to support branch logistics.

The VMSW follows and executes the Property Management Plan (PMP) and accompanying preventative maintenance schedule ensuring completion of items in a timely manner while maintaining an adequate store of supplies to adequately meet the demands of the department and associated PMP.


The VMSW participates as directed in the assessment and coordination of work to be done that may require major expenditures and the skills of outside trades-people of all agency buildings equipment and assets

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Maintains all agency and designated partner organization properties identified including building envelope interior spaces equipment and grounds. Coordinates and maintains housekeeping in all spaces to a hotel clean level and in the Health Centre to a Hospital Clean level while following all infection prevention and control procedures and best practices:
  • Maintaining a schedule of preventative maintenance as informed by the PMP and as directed
  • Participates and conducts as directed regular inspections assessing condition of buildings equipment and assets to make recommendations on repairs replacements or improvements
  • Performing repairs to buildings and equipment within the teams capabilities and expertise
  • Through best practice and IPAC processes maintains a level of cleanliness through housekeeping responsibilities utilizing a Hotel Clean standard for all spaces except for the Health Centre whereby Hospital Clean level is the standard
  • Ensuring a minimum workload for the Vocational Maintenance Team as negotiated with the Facility Services Supervisor
  • Coordination and execution of work orders and preventative maintenance work with the vocational maintenance team resources.
  • Participates in the assessment of work to be done that may require large expenditures of money and/or the use of specialized trades-people
  • Receive and responds to work orders created by staff who have identified a need for repair(s) as approved
  • Participates in the coordination supervision and direction of onsite external tradespeople and or vendors the agency has engaged for work to be done
  • Is responsible for the safe supervision execution and completion of day to day work within Facilities Services Department. Is deemed a competent supervisor under the definitions of the OH&S Act
  • Participates in developing and delivering training to the VM Team both hands on and in classroom to maintain skills and develop new skills
  • Participates in regular performance evaluations of Vocational Maintenance Team members by providing input into the process from observation of jobs skills and performance
  • Participates and assists as directed in all agency vehicle fleet management activities including but not limited to: utilization scheduling weekly vehicle maintenance and upkeep licencing scheduled service and repairs
  • Participates as directed in costing projects and necessary repairs or improvements to buildings equipment or assets
  • Works flexible hours as required and directed including evenings and weekends as dictated by work demands. May be required to work statutory holidays in the event of a facility emergency
  • Ensures all file management and reports are maintained in a comprehensive and timely manner which includes: developing and completing reports as requested development and execution of any daily checklists as required
  • Responsible for scheduling of the Vocational Maintenance Team to ensure appropriate vocational staff coverage for all service operations by coordinating vacation and time off coverage to meet resources demands daily
  • Responsible for ensuring all timecards and payroll entries are correct and complete for approval by Supervisor/Manager
  • Participating with partner agencies in administrative and program development meetings.
  • Meeting accountability standards outlined in work plan including budget monitoring and planning
  • Participates in reporting serious occurrences and issues current status and proposed action/responses within stipulated timelines using the appropriate form/software.

EDUCATION & SKILLS:

  • Knowledge and skills acquired through the completion of two years post-secondary diploma in building systems construction technology facility operations and management and/or a trades designation. Secondary education in the way of a diploma in social services or human sciences would be an asset.
  • Two (2) years recent relevant experience in the following areas: trades facility management working with vulnerable populations leadership.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building systems electrical HVAC drywall painting housekeeping and general maintenance and repairs. knowledge of mental illness and interventions would be considered an asset; demonstrated proficiency required with MS Windows Office Suite programs i.e. Word Excel Outlook and PowerPoint; proficiency in French language would be considered an asset
  • Bilingualism in both official languages at the advanced level is considered an asset.
  • A valid Ontario Drivers License with access to a reliable vehicle and proof of current insurance and licensing are required for this position.

Hours of Work: Thirty-Five (35) hour work week. The agencys regular hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Flexible hours are required to meet client and service needs.

Salary range: Grade 8 $35.71 $42.25 per hour

Per 2022 - 2026 Collective Agreement

Applicable shift premiums are paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement Article 17.11.
