POSITION SUMMARY:

The Patient Experience Specialists are responsible for the enhancement of the patient/family experience by ensuring children youth and families are CHEOs Partners in Health. The role promotes child youth and family engagement in quality improvement including the facilitation of patient relations (inquiries compliments and concerns) supporting engagement strategies and promoting the use of engagement data by the organization in setting strategies goals and its associated action plans.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Ensure the mediation of patient/family concerns regarding the quality of care and services at CHEO which have not been able to be addressed at the point of care. Facilitate the process according to the corporate policy and algorithm including ensuring inclusion of the patient/family in the process.
  • Respond to patient/family inquiries about and requests for exceptions to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Respond to and coordinate requests for care by international patients.
  • Acknowledge and ensure communication of compliments received at the Executive level.
  • Assist in the hospitals response to workplace violence involving patients/families with the goal to optimize patient care while maintaining a zero-tolerance abuse culture liaising with Security as needed.
  • Participate in case conferences or critical event debriefings as required.
  • Provide knowledge / expertise on patient relations relevant health and social law (Health Care Consent Act Mental Health Act Child and Family Services Act Excellent Care for All Act).
  • Facilitate the development and analysis of patient experience metrics (experience surveys patient relations trends focus groups advisory councils direct observation manager / staff perspectives) to formulate recommendations for improving the patient experience.
  • Facilitate engagement strategies for child youth and families to ensure their partnership in quality improvement including but not limited to; supporting and evaluating advisors participation focus groups experience surveys advisory councils and strategies to inform.
  • Maintain a database of patient relations activity for future reference and statistical analysis. Facilitate the inclusion of this data in the corporate departmental and local level metrics. Identify high-risk situations to members of the Executive Team and Risk Management as appropriate.
  • Provide education opportunities to staff and physicians on related topics (e.g. patient/family rights and responsibilities Patient/Family Feedback mediation of concerns/abusive behaviour customer service training etc.).
  • Coordinate any reporting on patient relations metrics to external organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree in Social Sciences or a health-related field. (Essential)
  • Masters degree (Preferred).
  • Minimum two (2) years of related experience (Essential)
  • Strong conflict management and mediation skills (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of the principles of patient relations and engagement (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of applicable consent and privacy legislations (Essential)
  • Ability to analyze data and information in a meaningful way at an individual and group level. (Essential)
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and coordinate multiple priorities and projects (Essential)
  • Comprehensive skills for the use relevant computer technology (Essential)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both orally and in writing (Essential)
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with staff and physicians to maintain effective working relationships. (Essential)
  • Track record of dealing effectively with frequent emotional situations involving patients and their families. (Essential)
  • Police Record Check (PRC) (Essential)
  • Bilingualism (English/French) (Preferred).

Effective March 29 2021 CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test practical exam or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested. Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
