Job Duties
** This position is hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year. **
Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870 when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property with a scheduled completion date of 2027.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the persons individual needs recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication evidence-based group and individual therapy peer support psychosocial rehabilitation vocational training preparation for court and treatment for substance use.
Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Part-Time Physician to join our dedicated team providing essential after-hours care to individuals with complex psychiatric and medical needs. In this critical role the physician will respond to all psychiatric and medical urgencies and emergencies during their shift ensuring timely accurate evaluations treatments and documentationespecially in cases involving seclusion/restraint or medical crises. Responsibilities include reviewing referrals for admission completing physician-to-physician consultations and managing all after-hours admissions including comprehensive medical assessments risk evaluations and initiation of treatment plans. The physician will also handle documentation for discharges or transfers as needed. Additional duties include completing mandated training and CME requirements staying informed of policy updates and maintaining timely communication with Medical Affairs. This is an excellent opportunity for a physician passionate about compassionate high-impact care in a dynamic behavioral health setting.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy degree.
- Must possess a license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia or obtain one prior to the start of employment.
- Eligible to obtain a DEA registration.
Additional Considerations
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with nursing staff.
- Familiarity with current treatment modalities both psychiatric and medical.
- Good medical and psychiatric diagnostic skills.
- EHR proficiency.
