Responsibilities

The Saint Joseph Hospital/Market Chief Medical Officer (MCMO) for the Kentucky market is a senior-level leadership position with essential market responsibilities that align with market regional and national priorities. The MCMOs primary responsibilities are at both the hospital and market levels and the individual reports directly to the Hospital President with matrix reporting to both the Kentucky Market President and the South Region Chief Medical Officer (RCMO). The MCMO has a dyad relationship with the Market Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and together they are accountable to the Hospital President Market President Region Chief Medical Officer and Region Chief Nursing Officer for leading clinical care delivery at Saint Joseph Hospital and in the Kentucky market.

The Kentucky market comprises 7 hospitals ranging from a Continuing Care Facility to a large tertiary care community hospital with over 900 medical staff members and more than 500 advanced practice providers. Saint Joseph Hospital is licensed for 400 beds and is a tertiary referral center. The Kentucky market is part of the CommonSpirit South region which is composed of 33 acute care facilities serving 7 distinct markets across 6 states. Ambulatory assets include ambulatory surgery centers imaging centers urgent care facilities and over 350 medical clinics. CommonSpirit spans 24 states and comprises over 2200 care sites more than 35000 providers and over 45000 nurses.

Hospital
The Saint Joseph Hospital Chief Medical Officer is a key Executive team member who partners to develop and implement hospital operating plans including strategy operations and care delivery. The Hospital CMO will lead the hospitals continuing emphasis on highvalue safe patient care through oversight of all aspects of physician performance quality and clinical integration. Specifically responsible for providing the clinical operational strategic and cultural leadership necessary to deliver care that is highvalue (cost quality and patient experience) across the continuum of care. Will achieve this through the implementation of key strategic and operational initiatives that move the organization through work that involves maximizing clinical operations; improving clinician alignment and satisfaction and leadingevidence-based programs practices and activities. Effectiveness of the position will be reflected in outcome measures expressed in measures of quality of care patient safety improved efficiency patient satisfaction and financial performance.

Market
The Market Chief Medical Officer is a key Executive team member partnering to develop and implement market operating plans including strategy operations and care delivery. The market Chief Medical Officer builds and develops leadership teams resulting in ownership and accountability that
results in rapid implementation of clinical best practices reduces unnecessary care variation and drives improvement in the quality of care the efficiency of care and the cost of care at all market hospitals. Additional market accountabilities as the MCMO include patient safety patient experience physician
engagement physician recruitment and medical staff affairs. A key function of the MCMO is to drive alignment and accountability across local hospitals and providers in the market aligning with regional and national priorities.

Job duties :

  • The MCMO serves as the primary liaison between the RCMO and other Hospital Chief Medical Officers ( HCMOs) in the market. The MCMO is well-positioned to effectively communicate national and regional priorities and expectations from the RCMO. Similarly the MCMO communicates concerns questions
    and suggestions from HCMO colleagues to the RCMO.
  • The MCMO collaborates with the RCMO and MCNO to disseminate and support national clinical goalsadvance clinical excellence (i.e. quality patient safety and patient experience) promote adherence to clinical standards reduce unnecessary clinical variation and ensure regulatory readiness. The MCMO is accountable for closely monitoring clinical performance in the market focusing on and supporting facilities that are under-performing and involving the RCMO as appropriate.
  • The MCMO works with the RCMO to sponsor coordinate and communicate national Chief Physician Executive Officer initiatives across the market. The MCMO assists other HCMOs in the market with their local physician engagement and well-being efforts.
  • The MCMO works with the Market President and physician enterprise leaders to set strategic direction and increase the competitive position for the market.
  • The MCMO also partners with colleagues in Physician Enterprise in developing physician networks strengthening market integrity and expanding non-acute care services. This includes the Saint Joseph Medical Group contracted service providers and a large number of independent medical groups.
  • Partner with and/or lead service lines lead medical directors and lead medical staff activities at each facility in the market.
  • Partner with the Chief(s) of Staff and the market MSO director to lead credentialing privileging and peer review.
  • Set strategic direction for the above mentioned areas which includes planning and managing processes and services for these disciplines to meet Saint Joseph Hospitals current and future needs. Develop and integrate these plans and processes to support Saint Josephs vision mission and strategies.
  • Provide medical leadership oversight for the development of high quality cost-effective and integrated clinical programs within the hospital and in a range of ambulatory settings.
  • Develop and foster effective collaboration between clinical departments divisions medical staff leadership faculty and other affiliated services to ensure an integrated approach to providing services and fulfilling the hospitals clinical research and educational goals
  • Establish medical director councils/clinical program leadership groups to conduct the work of clinical operationsclinical integration and population health management. Collect and share group trend data on resource utilization and lengthofstay and works with councils/groups to develop implement and monitor improvement plans.
  • Active participation in the care coordination program including monitoring of the appropriateness of procedures admissions and utilization of resources.
  • Provide compliance and accreditation oversight for all institutional licensing agencies working with the CHI Health Corporate Responsibility Officer when appropriate.
  • Advises Saint Joseph Hospital President the Kentucky Market President The Region CMO and the Board of community advisors on all physician practice issues.
  • Ensure a robust peer review and credentialing process emphasizing quality safety service and behavioral issues on the part of the medical staff are addressed fairly and in a timely fashion.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • 5 or more years of medical practice
  • 5 or more years of HCMO experience or a comparable formal senior leadership role

Preferred Education and Experience Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Advanced degree in business medical or health-caremanagement (preferred)
  • Active medical license in the hospital location state
  • Board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS) specialty

Required Minimum Knowledge Skills Abilities and Training

  • Outstanding communication and change management skills ability to influence physicians and leaders and demonstrable humankindness
