Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Practice and Academics the Director provides senior leadership for the development and execution of Oslers Quality Excellence and Research and Academics strategy. Central to this role is the advancement of a high-performing academically integrated practice environment that supports high-quality safe person-centered care and professional growth.

The Director will lead teams responsible for clinical education student placement integration academic partnerships the simulation lab policy development and professional practice development across all sites. This role is key to building scholarly capacity within leaders and frontline teams and creating robust career development pathways for nurses and allied health professionals. As a transformational leader and change agent the Director will help to create an environment where leaders clinical teams and learners thrive resulting in improved patient outcomes better staff and learner engagement and system efficiencies. Accountabilities:

  • Lead the strategic growth and operationalization of Oslers Academic Practice Partnership model ensuring alignment with system priorities and academic partner goals
  • Strengthen collaboration with colleges and universities to create an exceptional learning experience for learners enhance faculty engagement and academic alignment across nursing and allied health
  • Create sustainable structures for integrating teaching practice and research in the clinical setting
  • Build capacity and support the development of nurses and allied health staff who act as preceptors and preceptors to have the knowledge and skills to create an exceptional learning experience and facilitate the successful delivery of course/learning objectives of the learners
  • Oversee professional practice standards simulation lab and interprofessional education programming that support collaborative evidence-based care across disciplines
  • Partner with the Director of Quality Risk and Patient safety to ensure accreditation standards are sustained continue to advance QIPs and create a Just Culture in the organization
  • Standardize practices across sites and programs
  • Support the development and advancements of Advanced Practice Nursing roles
  • In collaboration with other leaders at Osler provide SME in the development of new programs and models of care including safe staffing models
  • Provide direction coaching and mentorship to clinical educators managers professional practice leaders and frontline preceptors
  • Provide operational leadership and oversight to the professional services department consisting of over 250 allied health staff across the inpatient units at the various Osler sites
  • Champion initiatives that highlights the important role of nurses and health professions staff by ensuring optimized scopes of practice role clarity and effective interprofessional team functions
  • Provide operational leadership and oversight to the clinical placement process supporting over 2000 learners (nurses and allied health staff) in the organization annually
  • Provide leadership and oversight of various Ministry of Health funded initiatives that support the learning development and transition to practice of clinical staff (e.g. Nursing New Graduate Guarantee IEN/SPEP Clinical Extern Program and Clinical Scholar)
  • Provide leadership in change management process to engage leaders and implement from concept to operations
  • Support the successful adoption of the new Hospital Information system and ensure that best practices and workflows create a safe efficient and high quality care
  • Champion a culture of inquiry and clinical scholarship by supporting staff in engaging with research quality improvement and knowledge translation initiatives including but not limited to the implementation of best-practice guidelines knowledge transfer activities such as publications or presenting work at peer-reviewed symposiums or conferences and delivery of best practices in teaching and learning
  • In partnership with the Osler Research Institute for Health Innovation establish mentorship infrastructure and partnerships to facilitate scholarly projects led by nurses and allied health professionals
  • Partner with academic institutions to develop joint clinical scholarship initiatives and promote shared appointments or adjunct roles
  • Develop metrics and key performance indicators to highlight the impact of the programs to patient outcomes program/organizational efficiencies staff and learner engagement and scholarly activities
  • Build capacity for members of the the practice and academics portfolio to utilize and produce new research and engage in knowledge transfer activities such as presenting in scientific and peer-reviewed conferences and publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence lifelong learning and interprofessional education and collaboration that reflects Oslers values of Humility Compassion Innovation Excellence and Inclusivity
  • Support leadership development and succession planning across clinical teams by aligning educational strategies with talent and workforce planning

Qualifications :

  • A regulated health care professional  Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario Preferred
  • Masters degree in Nursing Business or Health Administration or Education
  • Doctorate preferred in Nursing or Education  
  • Minimum 710 years of progressive leadership experience in large and complex academic health settings professional practice or clinical education
  • Demonstrated experience in professional practice academic-practice partnerships interprofessional education and clinical scholarship development
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with internal and external leaders develop coalitions and system transformation
  • Experience with Ministry of Health Funded initiatives and external reporting
  • Strong understanding of health care legislative and regulatory requirements (e.g. Public Hospitals Act Regulated Health Professions Act College of Nurses of Ontario Standards etc)
  • Solid understanding of clinical operations and service delivery models
  • Strong track record of collaboration with academic institutions and health system partners
  • Deep understanding of adult learning theory clinical research methods and system-level change
  • Excellent interpersonal coaching strategic thinking and problem solving skills
  • Commitment to equity inclusion and culturally safe care
  • Ability to travel between all Osler sites
