Overview
The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the Utah State University College of Veterinary Medicine (USU CVM) is seeking applicants who are board-certified in anatomic pathology and have an interest in pursuing board certification in clinical pathology for a professional practice assistant professor faculty position. This is a fiscal year appointment in a non-tenure track position that includes 60% teaching 35% clinical diagnostic service and 5% service. The clinical diagnostic service is provided through the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL). The UVDL is a cooperative effort by USU and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food and is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). Evaluation of candidates will begin August 15 2025 and will continue until the position is filled. Anticipated start date January 2 2026.
The candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of veterinary professionals by delivering anatomic pathology and clinical pathology instruction in the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree curriculum. In this capacity the candidate is also expected to develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies assessment tools and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students mastery throughout the programs entirety. The candidate will also contribute to additional curriculum activities associated with their expertise.
The USU CVM was founded in 2022 and received a letter of reasonable assurance of accreditation from the AVMA COE in 2025. The CVM will admit its inaugural class of 40 students in the fall of 2025 and support a class size of 80 veterinary students in subsequent years.

Responsibilities
Position Responsibilities for Teaching:
- Provide anatomic and clinical pathology instruction in the new DVM degree curriculum.
- Train veterinary pathology residents and graduate students.
- Develop and coordinate a 1-month diagnostic medicine rotation for 4th-year veterinary students
Position Responsibilities for Clinical Diagnostic Extension Service at the UVDL:
- Pursue and obtain board certification in clinical pathology with the ACVP within five years. Time will be allowed for clinical pathology training and board preparation.
- Perform veterinary diagnostic laboratory duties as a pathologist and veterinary medical diagnostician.
- Provide medical interpretations of data generated by laboratory technicians in your section and summarize cases wherein laboratory data is generated from more than one section.
- Document laboratory medical findings by photographic and written reports.
- Communicate both orally and in writing laboratory findings to submitting veterinarians animal owners public health officials and regulatory personnel.
- Provide pathology support to USU researchers.
- Demonstrate scholarship in veterinary laboratory diagnostic medicine by publishing case reports reviews etc. in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in maintaining laboratory accreditation.
- Perform additional duties that support the overall mission of the UVDL.
Position Responsibilities for Service:
- Contribute to the department college university and profession through service (e.g. serve on graduate student curriculum hiring and admissions committees)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- DVM or equivalent degree
- Board certification in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or the European College of Veterinary
- Pathologists (ECVP)
- At least one year of experience as a veterinary anatomic pathologist and diagnostician
- Demonstrated experience teaching anatomic pathology to veterinary students
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative setting
- The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing to ensure clear interactions with clients colleagues and the veterinary healthcare team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD degree
- Demonstrated experience assisting with instruction of clinical pathology to veterinary students
- Demonstrated experience training pathology residents pursuing ACVP board certification
