Job Description Summary:

The University of Kansas School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Vice-Chair of Research to be an integral member of a growing emergency medicine program.

Job Description:

The Emergency Department is currently 57 beds with 33 faculty 30 residents & 9 APPs serving greater than 64000 annual visits at a 1045-bed Level 1 trauma center.The medical center is also a comprehensive stroke center STEMI & advanced cardiac care center NCI-designated cancer center and an active transplant center.

The ED patient population is diverse and reflects the high acuity & complexity of the hospitals advanced specialties. The ED is breaking ground on an immediately adjacent expansion that will result in greater than 75 all-private & monitored beds a 2nd CT scan multiple new resuscitation bays and ample provider and nursing stations to be completed in 2023. The program has EM fellowships in Ultrasound Administration Education and is completing ACGME accreditation requirements for a new EMS fellowship.The Vice-Chair of Research will lead the Departments research activities. S/he will be responsible for providing the vision strategic direction and environment to grow and sustain the expansion of research. This position will interact and collaborate with multiple departments and the various institutes throughout the KU Medical Center. The long-term vision is for growth within the Department of Emergency Medicine that will lead to long-term research sustainability.

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Growth and vitality of emergency care research in the department including but not limited to clinical research health services and medical education.
  • To provide the leadership and mentorship necessary to achieve our goal of becoming anNIH-funded program.
  • To improve the scientific basis for high quality emergency care delivery
  • To advance the national reputation of the Department by means of research excellence with a unifying theme through increased conduct of funded clinical research increased publications and consistently strong enrollment in clinical studies.
  • A particular focus on mentorship and development of learners and faculty from under-represented groups in medicine is a priority.

Primary Responsibilities:

Administrative

  • Aggressively recruit additional research faculty (including MD and PhD) in areas of departmental focus.
  • Assist with development of annual budget for clinical and basic sciences research.
  • Together with the Chair Research Manager and Senior Administrator oversee overall research funds flows including ensuring appropriate and sustainable staffing levels appropriate use of funds etc.
  • Maintain databases to provide information for research reports and research updates.
  • Participate in and lead discussions of research topics and concerns at the student resident fellow faculty executive and institutional levels.

Research

  • Secure departmentalNIH other federal research support and industry support.
  • Coordinate clinical research with external departments and actively develop new research collaborations.
  • Seek out obtain and implement industry-funded trials which either advance our core missions or provide additional support to research staff.
  • Actively manage the clinical research enrollment mission to ensure enrollment targets are met and exceeded.
  • Identify problem areas develop solutions and assist other investigators with enrollment difficulties.
  • Oversee research budgets for all clinical trials to ensure they are appropriate and equitable.

Mentorship

  • Oversee career development/effort of junior clinical research faculty ensuring appropriate commitment effort and productivity.
  • Provide direct mentorship to research junior faculty.
  • Be a primary mentor for trainees (residents fellows) who have self-identified as committed future research faculty.

Education

  • Create in conjunction with education faculty leadership a program to increase the academic productivity of educational faculty by providing targeted research support to help non-research faculty develop areas of interest and concentrated research programs.
  • Assist with residency recruitment of candidates identified as potential future academic faculty by active participation in their interview process.

Qualifications:

M.D. D.O. or M.D./Ph.D. degree or equivalent with a record of accomplishments in research PhD must have secured extramural funding source. Strong track record of research productivity including NIH (or comparable) peer-reviewed funding; significant experience obtaining and administering extramural funding from a range of sponsors. Mentorship of junior faculty and trainees would be preferred.
