The company is currently in a period of major transformation and renewal. As part of its strategic growth plan TAT recently opened a new state-of-the-art R&D facility in Charlotte NC which will serve as the centerpiece for advanced research and development in thermal management systems. This facility is designed to accelerate innovation support next-generation aerospace platforms (e.g. Electric / Hybrid / Hydrogen Fuel Cell Aircraft) and position TAT as a key player in electrified propulsion and fuel cell technologies.
The Thermal Management Systems Expert role is critical in this context. This is a unique opportunity to join TAT during an exciting phase of expansion and help build R&D capabilities from the ground up. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping thermal technologies for the future while thriving in a fast-paced collaborative and highly technical environment.
Main Responsibilities
The Thermal Management Systems Expert will be responsible for leading executing and supporting activities essential to the design development and validation of advanced thermal management systems for aerospace and defense platforms. This includes ownership of technical performance collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and active participation in establishing TATs R&D presence in Charlotte.
- Design Leadership: Lead the design and optimization of complex thermal management systems to meet program technical specifications and aerospace standards. Ensure designs are robust lightweight and capable of handling extreme environmental and operational conditions.
- System Modeling & Analysis: Develop system-level models and perform detailed thermal and fluid simulations (steady-state and transient) using tools such as GT-Suite. Provide predictive performance data to guide design decisions and validate against testing results.
- Prototyping & Validation: Oversee the prototyping process ensuring alignment with design intent and manufacturability requirements. Collaborate with test engineers to develop test plans execute testing and analyze results to validate system performance.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain detailed engineering documentation including specifications design reports BOMs drawings test plans and validation reports ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory and customer requirements.
- R&D Strategy Support: Contribute to the establishment of TATs Charlotte R&D center by defining processes tools and best practices for thermal systems engineering. Participate in developing technology roadmaps for next-generation aerospace platforms.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the thermal systems technical lead within cross-disciplinary project teams working closely with mechanical electrical manufacturing and supply chain teams to achieve integrated solutions.
- Supplier & Customer Engagement: Engage with suppliers to evaluate and select thermal components. Provide technical support during discussions with customers presenting solutions and addressing technical inquiries confidently.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of innovation within the R&D team by proposing new concepts materials and approaches. Actively contributes to brainstorming sessions and collaborative design.
RequirementsProfessional Experience/ Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline with a strong focus on thermal/fluid systems.
- Extensive experience (1530 years) in the design development and validation of advanced thermal management systems for aerospace or equivalent high-performance industries.
- Expertise in system-level thermal modeling and simulation using tools such as GT-Suite with a proven track record of applying these tools to complex thermal-fluid systems.
- Hands-on expertise in thermal system prototyping and validation testing including collaboration with test labs and interpreting data to drive design refinements.
- Deep understanding of heat transfer thermodynamics and fluid dynamics applied to real-world aerospace applications.
- Strong knowledge of CAD tools (preferably SolidWorks) for generating preliminary 3D models and conveying design intent.
- Demonstrated knowledge of electric system design and controls integration as they relate to thermal management solutions.
- Familiarity with CFD and FEA tools such as ANSYS STAR-CCM etc.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical topics clearly.
- Experience with Aerospace and Defense regulatory compliance standards such as FAA FAR DFAR ITAR etc. is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced R&D-driven environment.
