Job Summary

Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating with chemicals slicing and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.

Essential Functions
-Performs specimen collection accessioning and logging routines.

-Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.

-Processes embeds and sections tissues for slides.

-Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule recording temperatures on various instruments changing the processor according to procedure and changing staining solutions.

-Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.

-Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe clean and prepared work area.

High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Graduate Certificate Histology preferred

Clinical or Histology experience 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation decalcifications processing embedding routine and special stains and frozen sections.
- Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
- Participates in relevant continuing education programs.
