The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA is looking for a Communications Director to join our Denver/hybrid team.


The Communications Director will be responsible for developing and leading MGMAs enterprise-wide communications strategy. This includes overseeing brand positioning executive communications internal communications public relations and social media. The position plays a critical role in enhancing MGMAs voice visibility and influence within the healthcare industry and across broader external audiences.

Requirements

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with MGMAs business goals and mission.
  • Lead internal and external communications initiatives to increase awareness of MGMAs offerings and impact.
  • Manage media relations including proactive outreach reactive response and long-term relationship development with journalists influencers and industry stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic counsel and messaging support to MGMA executives including for keynotes media interviews and thought leadership articles.
  • Oversee internal communications that build trust alignment and culture across hybrid and remote teams.
  • Serve as brand steward ensuring consistency of voice and tone across all platforms and departments.
  • Monitor analyze and report on communications KPIs and adjust strategy accordingly.
  • Support crisis communication planning and response including scenario planning and media training.
  • Lead and mentor a small team of communications professionals; manage external agencies and freelancers as needed.
  • Collaborate with MGMA internal teams to align communications strategies across the organization.

Supervisory duties

  • Direct supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring and training employees; coaching mentoring and providing guidance; planning assigning and directing work; setting goals appraising performance and recognizing achievements; addressing performance or behavioral issues; and resolving employee concerns.

Knowledge skills and abilities

  • Strong leadership and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and execute in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including storytelling content development and speechwriting.
  • Demonstrated success leading integrated communications campaigns with measurable outcomes.
  • Experience managing media relations and serving as a spokesperson.
  • Proficient in tools like Microsoft Office SharePoint social media platforms and basic analytics tools; familiarity with project management tools and CMS/CRM systems is a plus.
  • Strong social media acumen and sound judgment in both personal and professional online presence.
  • Experience managing crisis communications issues response and/or public affairs initiatives.

Education

  • A bachelors degree in communications public relations journalism marketing or a related field.
  • Masters degree preferred.

Experience

  • Eight or more years of experience in communications PR or brand strategy.
  • Experience in healthcare associations or mission-driven organizations is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.


Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications

  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.

This is a largely sedentary role so employee must be able to remain in a sedentary position while focusing for extended periods of time throughout the workday. Position also requires occasional movement inside the office to access file cabinets printers etc. While performing the duties of this job employee is regularly required to successfully navigate scenarios requiring the following operational abilities:

  • Ability to operate PC/keyboard and other office productivity equipment
  • Ability to position self to traverse/navigate around typical office setting
  • Ability pull/push lift open/close grasp/manipulate transport up to 10 lbs.
