JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES
JOB SUMMARY: Assists in the supervision of employees in the Special Education Department. Assists with the overall direction coordination and evaluation of the special education department to ensure compliance with local state and federal laws. Responsibilities include but not limited to assistance in interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and overseeing work assignments and training needs of school psychologists and related services personnel. Additionally the Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating the training testing and certification processes for special education paraprofessionals. Facilitate meetings and conduct professional development on 504 and special education topics for staff (teachers paraprofessionals administrators school psychologists counselors and related services personnel).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assume decision-making responsibility in the absence of the Director.
- Assist in the direction and management of all special education programs 504s and services to meet student needs.
- Assist in the allocation and management of the necessary time resources and materials to support staff in the accomplishment of special education goals.
- Serve as an instructional leader.
- Develop and implement annual goals based on reliable information and data.
- Analyze data related to student outcomes and program effectiveness to inform continuous improvement.
- Assist with recruiting and retention of high quality teachers school psychologists therapists and support personnel.
- Work cooperatively with others to provide leadership and growth in curriculum and instruction.
- Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with the Board administration teachers and support personnel.
- Collaborate with the District Assessment Coordinator and Curriculum Office for implementation of OAAP/DLM.
- Create and Conduct various professional development activities for a various groups of staff parents and patrons on: Transition Autism Crisis Management and Compliance.
- Serve as an advisor to administrators school staff parents and Board.
- Supervise personnel for the purpose of assuring staff is performing at a level of success that positively impacts the Districts programs and expectations.
- Ensure the quality compliance and timely development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans.
- Facilitate resolution of parent concerns and disputes fostering collaborative relationships.
- Provide assistance in new program development.
- Provide support and administrative leadership to principals teachers and related service providers.
- Monitor assigned programs to ensure compliance with district and state curriculum.
- Prepares written documentation to respond to inquiries convey information or record events of meetings.
- Collaborate with the Transportation Department to coordinate transportation services for special education students.
- Coordinate and supervise the operation of Extended School Year.
EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- Masters Degree required or ability to complete Masters Degree within two years. Preferred fields include Education Administration Instructional Coach/Supervision and/or Special Education or closely related field.
- Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate or the credentials to obtain one prior to employment.
- 5 Years of successful increasingly responsible experience working with students with disabilities or leadership at the site or district level or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Ability to obtain certification as a trainer in restraint/seclusion and conduct training for staff.
- Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent laws codes policies and/or regulations; categorical funding regulations; personnel processes; program planning and development and concepts of grammar punctuation and communication. Knowledge of special education information systems and data software.
- Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups and individuals; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with detailed information/data.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Will be required to regularly stand; walk; and sit for extended periods.
- Must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
- May experience constant interruptions inflexible deadlines and changes to normal routines; flexibility is required including night time meetings and activities as well as meetings outside the normal work day.
- The ability to communicate with various groups of people is essential. This may include communication with parents teachers transportation administrators and outside agencies.
- Required to meet multiple deadlines; required to deal with distraught or angry people; requires travel within the district; requires some travel outside of the community.
- The ability to effectively balance time and effectiveness in an office environment a classroom environment and a collaborative leadership environment constitute a major portion of this job.
- The ability to use various technology and software programs as tools to comply with local state and federal guidelines in the area of special services.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- 220 day contract 8 hours per day
- Salary placement based on administrative experience building level or above
- As of the 2025-2026 school year benefits include: fully paid Oklahoma Teachers Retirement; health insurance for the employee; vision insurance for the employee; $10000 life insurance policy; 3 days personal leave; 3 days annual leave; and 11 days of sick leave.
