Are you passionate about guiding students in their spiritual growth fostering interfaith dialogue and building community through service and leadership Linfield University is seeking a dedicated and visionary individual to serve as our next University Chaplain and Director of Service Leadership.

Position Summary:

The University Chaplain reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and serves as an active member of the Student Affairs Division. This role is responsible for the spiritual well-being and development of students and provides programming support and pastoral guidance to the entire campus community.

The Chaplain serves as a reference point for exploration and understanding of diverse faith traditions and their contribution to the campus community. This position also oversees the student leadership team and supports the leadership development of this group as well as other student organizations representing a faith tradition. The Chaplain works with spiritual leaders in the local and metro Oregon communities to build collaborative programs for Linfield.

In addition the Chaplain will lead community-based service programs for students including providing leadership for the McMinnville Campus Food Pantry. This position collaborates with Academic Affairs Admission Athletics and other key campus partners.

Work Schedule: M-F 8 am to 5 pm occasional weekends and evenings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Serve as a member of the Student Affairs leadership team advising the University on a wide range of student and campus issues.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the religious communities on campus including the Chaplains team.
  • Oversee the student Service Leadership Team and develop relationships with community partners.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse religious communities in the local and metropolitan areas.
  • Respond to campus crises and provide pastoral care in emergencies.
  • Serve as steward of the Emaus House on the McMinnville campus.

Student Development Involvement and Service

  • Maintain a visible presence for students and be actively engaged in student life.
  • Support the spiritual growth and reflection of students of all faith traditions and those with an active religious practice.
  • Collaborate with the Office for Belonging and Inclusion Student Activities and health/counseling programs to support the needs of all community members.
  • Coordinate service leadership programs for students by supervising a student leadership group.
  • Oversee recognized student faith-based organizations.
  • Encourage values integrity and ethics across university life.
  • Support pastoral needs and programming at the Portland School of Nursing campus.
  • Oversee the Wildcat Food Pantry coordinating with student leaders and Yamhill County Food Pantry to support food-insecure students.
  • Serve as a campus leader on issues of equity justice and diversity.
  • Create opportunities for dialogue reflection and collaboration across diverse perspectives.
  • Foster a spirit of community and stimulate concern for social justice locally and globally.
  • Help students explore interfaith connections based on shared values of kindness compassion and ethics of care.
  • Encourage community-based service experiences that integrate theory and practice.

University Ceremonies and Traditions

  • Provide ritual leadership at university ceremonies and official events including Convocation and Commencement.
  • Plan the Baccalaureate service during Commencement weekend and other traditional faith-based ceremonies throughout the academic year.

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree required; relevant advanced degree preferred (e.g. Master of Divinity or Masters degree in a related field).
  • Minimum of 23 years of experience as a campus minister university chaplain pastor or in young adult ministry.
  • Strong commitment to interfaith work and experience with individuals of diverse faith traditions.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute faith-related programming especially for college students.
  • Experience facilitating group discussions and spiritual activities.
  • Skilled in identifying mentoring and training student leaders.
  • Demonstrated dedication to fostering an inclusive culture across diverse identities and backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A commitment to full and active engagement in university life and programs.
