General ResponsibilitiesReporting directly to the Special Education Teacher the Deaf Educational Interpreter works in conjunction with a hearing Sign Language interpreter to provide communication facilitation between hearing deaf and hard of hearing staff and students in the classroom and school events and activities.
Salary:Salary:The full salary range for this position is $29.44 - $35.82 per hour.*Offers are made at the beginning of the range. *Beginning September 1 2025 the range will be $30.18 - $36.72 per hour. Offers are made at the beginning of the range.
Assignment/Location:This position is 32 hrs/wk school year schedule with hours over the summer to support extended school year starting July 14 2025. It will serve Quest Academy in Longview WA. Summer hours for ESY will be 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Monday - Thursday from July 14th - August 7th.
Essential Functions/Other FunctionsEssential Functions:- Interprets any and all information presented in a classroom or building situation (e.g. lectures announcements discussions assemblies etc.) for the purpose of providing student access to the services and activities provided by the school district and for staff to understand student comments and questions.
- Interpret communications between hearing deaf and hard of hearing students parents and/or staff members in the classroom at conferences IEP meetings and other school activities.
- Work as a resource specialist with deaf or hard of hearing students and their teachers to develop language articulation and academic skills within the school and home environment.
- Supports staff in maintaining a safe environment for all.
- Attends a variety of meetings (e.g. IEPs training team meetings meetings with outside agencies etc.) for the purpose of conveying and receiving information. This person is not responsible for interpreting during team meetings.
- Assists with classroom modifications when appropriate as determined by the IEP educational team or in consultation with other direct service personnel for the purpose of meeting the educational and access needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Confers and plans with the educational team to prepare for interpreting for the purpose of meeting the educational and access needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Maintains confidentiality for the purpose of maintaining student privacy and to adhere to FERPA..
- Works with teachers and staff to maintain documents files and records (e.g. IEP progress reports student progress data activity logs etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities student progress and ensuring an up-to-date trail for compliance
- Provides access to the students school day which may include testing time clubs or independent work for the purpose of providing student access to the services and activities provided by the school district and to provides access to the students/students participation efforts.
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & SkillsMinimum Qualifications:- High school diploma or GED.
- Deaf or hard of hearing.
- Has Passed the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or is otherwise qualified as a Deaf Interpreter
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:- Experience as an interpreter in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of programs and services for individuals with disabilities.
Working Conditions/Employment RequirementsWorking Conditions/Physical Requirements:- Classroom setting.
- Sufficient physical stamina and agility to perform sign language functions continuously through workday.
- Regular attendance during scheduled work hours.
Employment Requirements:- Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.
