About the Role
The Diagnostic & Research Scientist in the MAND Lab must demonstrate a commitment to advancing neurology research and be dedicated to their personal growth and goals within the strategic direction of St Vincents Hospital Melbourne (SVHM). Under the direction of the Senior Scientist in the MAND Lab and in alignment with SVHMs mission and values the Diagnostic & Research Scientist will assist with laboratory investigations for patients with suspected mitochondrial genetic and autoimmune encephalopathy disorders.
- Perform and manage laboratory activities in compliance with NATA guidelines and best practice standards including molecular biology and immunological testing patient specimen preparation and analysis while maintaining confidentiality of patient and laboratory records.
- Contribute to the development validation and implementation of new tests participate in quality assurance programs and assist in equipment maintenance and inventory management all while implementing OH&S principles to maintain a safe work environment.
- Support the operation of the MAND Lab by conducting key investigations into suspected mitochondrial and autoimmune encephalopathies.
- Develop validate and implement new molecular and immunological tests keeping up to date with emerging methodologies.
- Maintain compliance with NATA standards through participation in quality assurance programs and continuous process improvement.
- Collaborate with colleagues clinicians and external partners contributing to publications and NATA documentation
Classifications for this position will range from RX1 - RX7 ($63674 - $91785 per annum pro rata).
Your Contribution
- Relevant tertiary qualification and at least 3 years of experience in the health sector with specific skills in various laboratory techniques
- Knowledge of Patient sample handling (blood / serum CSF hair and urine) DNA extractions PCR/RFLP Sequencing Immunological techniques/ indirect immunofluorescence Microscopy MS Access
- A valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check or willing to obtain

POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Senior Scientist in the Mitochondrial and Autoimmune Neurological Disorders Laboratory the Diagnostic & Research Scientist is responsible for performing a number of key laboratory investigations to elucidate the underlying defects in patients with suspected mitochondrial genetic and autoimmune encephalopathy disorders.
- Actively participates in running the Mitochondrial and Autoimmune Neurological Disorders Laboratory.
- Performs daily laboratory activities according to NATA adheres to NATA guidelines and best practice standards.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and laboratory records.
- Demonstrates time management skills and ability to prioritise work.
- Assists with molecular biology and immunological testing patient specimen preparation and analysis.
- Assists in purchases maintenance and maintains an inventory of equipment and laboratory supplies.
- Integrates OH&S principles into laboratory practice and maintains a safe work environment.
- Troubleshoots system issues and resolves customer complaints.
- Introduces develops and validates new tests as required.
- Stays current with literature on new methodologies in molecular biology and immunology.
- Contributes and participates in internal and external quality assurance programs and strives for best practices.
- Reviews and ensures corrective action for non-conformance events.
- Communicates effectively with staff clinicians and external stakeholders.
- Supervises and trains junior and non-scientific staff as required.
- Attends meetings and discussions with senior scientists and directors.
- Participates in performance appraisals and departmental education meetings.
- Engages in continuing education and professional development activities.
- Contributes or produces validation/verification and NATA laboratory documentation.
- Contributes or produces to peer-reviewed scientific publications.
ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
